As a representative figure of the early German Romantics,F.Schlegel’s numerous theories have had a profound influence on literature, aesthetics, and other fields throughout Germany and even Europe.Standing within the framework of the principle of subjectivity,F.Schlegel inherited the Enlightenment’s idea of filling the God-shaped hole with reason, and carried the critical spirit of Enlightenment reason further, even to the point of questioning and doubting reason itself. He intended to create a "new mythology" that would reconcile nous and faith, intellectuality and poetry, finitude and infinitude, hoping to eradicate the imbalances and divisions that accompanied by the excessive emphasis on the principle of reason,to find the ultimate meaning of life, and ultimately to overcome the crisis of modernity.F.Schlegel’s concept of "new mythology" has a unique ideological content and historical significance, and this paper attempts to clarify the position and significance of F.Schlegel’s "new mythology" theory in Western intellectual history by examining the era in which it emerged, its specific connotations, unique features, and historical contributions.Specifically, the introduction of the paper discusses the value of the topic, summarizes the existing research on F.Schlegel’s "new mythology" theory in the current academia, and explains the research ideas of the paper.Chapter One outlines the context in which F.Schlegel’s "new mythology" theory emerged from four perspectives: ethnic, historical, philosophical and literary. The development of capitalism, the influence of religious atmosphere, the cultivation of speculative philosophy, the accumulation of literary trends, and the impact of the ideas of surrounding friends all played important roles in the formation of F.Schlegel’s unique ideological system.Chapter Two starts with mythology and identifies F.Schlegel’s concepts of "new mythology","modern poetry","romantic poetry",and "natural poetry".F.Schlegel’s revival of mythology was an attempt to compensate for the loss of reason with the poetic thinking that that characterizes mythology.Modern poetry and romantic poetry both embody the embryonic form of his "new mythology" theory, while natural poetry further presents the transformation of F.Schlegel’s worldview.Chapter Three specifies the characteristics of F.Schlegel’s "new mythology" theory, which aspires to entirety,to "synthesis",to the "poeticizing" and aesthetic redemption of life, and to the ultimate realization of the divine existence of man.Chapter Four explores the practical possibility and impact of F.Schlegel’s theory of the "new mythology".The conclusion briefly summarizes the content of F.Schlegel’s "new mythology" theory and further discusses its important significance for today’s society.
