Impact Of Preparation Guided By Schema Theory On Consecutive Interpretation And Strategies For Optimization

Pre-task preparation is the first step in an interpreter’s work and the key to success in interpreting.Schema theory,which holds that comprehension can only occur by combining information already stored in the brain with new information,is a cognitive psychological theory that emphasizes the role of background knowledge for language comprehension.This paper takes the mock conference “Covid-19 Special Report No.6 on Trade and Logistics” as a case to explain the content of pre-interpretation preparation from three aspects: linguistic schema,content schema and formal schema,analyses the impact of pre-task preparation guided by schema theory on interpretation according to the transcribed recordings and proposes optimization strategies.The effective application of pre-task preparation is beneficial to interpretation output in terms of improving accuracy and fluency,reducing the burden of listening and note-taking and easing the psychological stress of the interpreter.Problems related to pre-task preparation affect the quality of interpretation,including insufficient schemata,unfamiliarity with schemata and over-reliance on existing schemata,resulting in mistranslations,omissions,inappropriate pauses and repetitions.The corresponding strategies for optimizing pre-task preparation are: increase the schema reserve and broaden the types of schemata;enhance memorization and practice to improve familiarity with schemata;reduce reliance on schemata and emphasize active listening.
