| "Plain screen" is a form of screen."Plain screen" painting showed a peak in the middle of the Ming Dynasty, the number of more than 90,mostly appeared in the works of Wumen painters, and became a common choice of Wumen literati. The plain screen has had certain cultural images since The Three Kingdoms Period. How did it change meaning in different times when faced with the use of the same subject matter, and finally form a unique expression in the Ming Dynasty? This paper aims to explore the use and cultural connotation of the "plain screen" in the whole Chinese cultural history through the study of the "plain screen" image of Wu Men’s painting school,so as to deeply understand the life pursuit, observation and aesthetic expression of traditional literati. This thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter discusses the basic appearance of the plain screen before the Ming Dynasty and the generation of the image of the plain screen in the Wu Men painting school from three aspects: the origin and development of the plain screen, the aesthetic meaning of the plain screen and the general situation of the plain screen in the Wu men painting school. The second chapter analyzes the "personality" image of the "plain screen" of Wumen painting school from the perspective of image and literature. In the works of Wu Men painters, this symbolization has the image of "self-appropriate personality",which is not driven by external things and pursues self-appropriateness,and the image of "self-preserving personality",which is abiding by pure heart, knowing propriety and virtue.Wu Men painters pay attention to self-identity and pursue a free and individual way of life.Private garden-building activities flourished.Scholars of Wu men aimed to borrow the garden to nourish nutrients in order to achieve the harmony between the inner nature and the outer environment.Plain screen is selected, with aesthetic interest and cultural orientation. The third chapter analyzes the "retreat" image of the "plain screen" of Wumen painting school. The special background of the Ming Dynasty made the literati different from the hermits in the past.Although they lived in the prosperous market, they kept their own conduct and moral standards and pursued the freedom of the spiritual world. The "market hidden" in this period can be divided into the "seclusion" image of "natural and complacent" with farming, reading and drinking tea,and the "self-free and unrestrained" "seclusion" image with the theme of "fishing hidden" and "fairy hidden".Under the aesthetic tradition of literati "still plain",the paintings of Wumen School show the characteristics of simplicity, quiet and elegant.Wumen painters like plain screen painting, because of its simple shape, but also because of its simple cultural connotation.By taking care of the element of "plain screen",we hope to explore the development of plain screen in the whole history of Chinese culture, and make cultural connection between "plain screen" and ancient Chinese traditional plain screen, which reflects the aesthetic concept of color, decoration and lofty personality ideal of Chinese literati. |
