Lucy Maud Montgomery is a Canadian writer and poet in the early 20 th century. In Emily’s Trilogy,Montgomery developed the artist themes of Anne of Green Gables and The Storyteller, and described the growing process of a female writer in detail. The first chapter of this paper outlines the portrait of Emily,a young woman writer,by combing two clues of daily life and artistic creation. This is a woman writer who has gone through hardships in her artistic creation and successfully climbed the literary peak, and she is also an explorer who finds her place in family relations and gender relations. The second chapter analyzes Montgomery’s artistic techniques in shaping Emily’s image. The novel uses letters and diaries, contrasting techniques and natural environment to make the image of female writers three-dimensional and concrete. The third chapter expounds the connotation of Emily’s image by feminist criticism and social historical criticism, which is the key part of this paper.Montgomery’s portrayal of female writers revealed that men’s monopoly on knowledge and gender division of labor in patriarchal society make women’s creation difficult. As a female writer,Montgomery has the advantage of female natural narration. She not only exposes the oppression of women by male society, but also expresses the oppressed women’s desire for economic and spiritual independence. With the help of writing,Emily not only achieved economic independence, but also talked about herself and constructed herself.Emily’s Trilogy is an autobiographical artist’s initiation novel.Emily’s adherence to the romantic literary view and the idea of creating Canadian literature are the projection of Montgomery’s personal artistic view.Montgomery, like many female writers in the late 19 th century and early 20 th century, has both literary ambitions and anxiety about entering the public sphere. The last chapter of this paper points out the limitations of Montgomery’s female writer images.Montgomery’s self-censorship and the internalization of traditional women’s ideas limit the female writers in her works to a family field that does not destroy the male space, and deliberately curb the growth of female writers’ strength. The legendary imagination and seemingly perfect ending of the novel are at the expense of female creativity and the real dilemma of the female writer.
