The thinking quality proposed by The National English Curriculum Standards of Senior High School(2017 Edition)refers to the ability and level of students’ thinking in terms of logicality,criticality,and innovativeness.According to the theory of cognitive psychology,individual’s language ability and thinking quality are closely related.As an important part of language ability,listening comprehension plays a key role in the cultivation of students’ thinking quality.However,there is still a lack of research on whether the current listening teaching can effectively cultivate students’ thinking quality.Therefore,this study aims to investigate the current situation of the cultivation of students’ thinking quality in English listening teaching,analyze the main factors affecting the cultivation of students’ thinking quality,and explore the specific paths of cultivating students’ thinking quality.Based on Piaget’s cognitive development theory and constructivism theory,the author selects 500 students of senior grade one and 35 English teachers from two senior high schools.The author adopts three research methods,including questionnaire survey,classroom observation and interview to carry out the investigation,which mainly discusses the following two questions: 1)What is the current situation of the cultivation of students’ thinking quality in English listening teaching? 2)What are the main factors that affect the cultivation of thinking quality in English listening teaching?Through the analysis of the survey results,the following conclusions are drawn: 1)The performance of students’ thinking quality is at a medium level.Among them,logical thinking is the best,critical thinking is poor,and innovative thinking is the worst.2)The main factors influencing the cultivation of thinking quality in listening teaching include teacher factors,student factors and school factor.At the teacher level,teachers pay insufficient attention to the cultivation of students’ thinking quality;teachers’ teaching idea lags behind;teachers’ listening teaching design lacks the pertinence of the cultivation of thinking quality;teachers’ teaching design focuses on cultivating students’ lower-order thinking and ignores the development of higher-order thinking;the design of simple questions.At the student level,students have listening anxiety;students’ basic knowledge is weak;students are lack of effective listening learning strategies.At the school level,schools lack the guidance and training of teachers’ cutting-edge education teaching concept.In view of the current situation of the cultivation of students’ thinking quality and influencing factors of students’ thinking quality in listening teaching,some suggestions are put forward from the aspects of teachers,students and schools.At the level of teachers,teachers should update their educational ideas;teaching design should break through the limitations of low-level thinking;students’ higher-order thinking should be cultivated based on questioning strategy;teaching problems should be deepened in dimension;teachers should cultivate students’ interest in listening.At the student level,students should consolidate their basic language knowledge,including cultivating the correct pronunciation and intonation,expanding their listening vocabularies and enriching their own knowledge of western cultural background.At the school level,schools should actively organize collective lesson preparation;schools should actively carry out teaching and research activities;schools should develop characteristic listening school-based curriculum.Through the above suggestions,it is expected that the students’ thinking quality can be effectively cultivated in the future listening teaching.
