E-C Translation Study On Non-Predicate Verb Structures In Energy Policy Texts

This translation practice report is excerpted from Aspects of the Energy Union,a book on Energy policy,published by Springer Nature Switzerland AG in 2021.Based on Catford’s translation theory,this paper explores the structure shift,class shift and unit shift in the translation of non-predicate verb structures in energy policy texts and the translation methods.First of all,the author uses the corpus research method to count the number of non-predicate verb structures in the text and concludes that non-predicate verb structures often appear in energy policy texts.Then,the sentences in the translated text are classified according to the structure shift,class shift and unit shift.Finally,the method of combining theoretical analysis with case analysis is adopted to analyze specific cases.It is found that the language of the energy policy texts is rather objective and logical with non-predicate verb structures,passive voices and impersonal subjects.Besides,in the translation process,structure shift,class shift and unit shift occur frequently.To be more detailed,the shifts between active and passive structures,prepositive and postpositive attributives,non-predicate,as well as the shift between words,phrases and clauses are commonly used.In view of the structure shift,class shift and unit shift in energy policy texts,the author may shift the voice and sequence,change part of speech,and use preposition translation to carry out smooth translation,as well as conform to the reading habits of Chinese readers and better convey the original information.
