Research On The National Image Of China In Chinese Textbooks In Thailand

At present,with the economic prosperity and the improvement of international status,China’s influence in the world continues to expand,and many countries have set off a wave of learning Chinese,so that the cause of Chinese language education has been a vigorous development.Thailand is one of the most representative countries of “Chinese craze”.It has become a new fashion to learn Chinese in Thailand.Thai people like to learn Chinese and love Chinese culture,and are more willing to understand China in depth.Therefore,teaching Chinese as a foreign language,advantageous to the construction and the dissemination of Chinese image,has become a bridge for Thai people to understand China and a window for spreading Chinese culture.However,the author has found many problems in Thai textbooks for teaching Chinese as a foreign language which is one of the important media for Chinese learners during the one-year teaching practice in Thailand.Therefore,in order to construct and spread Chinese national image better through the Thai textbooks for teaching Chinese as a foreign language,the author chooses “Experiencing Chinese(Thai version)”,which is the popular Chinese textbook used by Thai students,as the main object of study to explore the construction of the image of China in Thai Chinese textbooks.The article is divided into six chapters.The first chapter is the research design,which includes the object of study,research methods and research ideas.The second chapter mainly uses the Chinese word segmentation software and manual screening to study the two modes of text and picture in the textbook to explore the dimensions of Chinese image displayed in the text and picture,and to carry on the data statistics and analysis.At the same time,the author conducted a questionnaire survey and interviews with Thai students,in order to understand Thai Chinese learners’ perception of Chinese images in Chinese textbooks.The third chapter analyzes the“Cultural experience”section of the textbook by contrast,and puts forward some suggestions for improvement.On the basis of the previous statistical analysis,the forth chapter analyzes and summarizes the successes and shortcomings of “Experiencing Chinese(Thai version)” in building the image of China.The successes include rich content,broad dimensions,objective and reasonable overall description,and rich and diverse image.The shortcomings are reflected in some aspects such as outdated content,imbalanced proportion of various image dimensions,relatively single presentation form,and unreasonable images.On this basis,combined with the author’s teaching practice experience in Thailand,the author proposes strategies for the compilation and use of building Chinese images in Thai Chinese textbooks: the content is authentic,timely,comprehensive and targeted;the presentation is interesting and colorful;and the pictures suitable for spreading the image of China are selected.The strategies for the use of textbooks include suggestions to Chinese teachers and Chinese learners.The fifth chapter is the conclusion part,including the summary and deficiency of the article.In a word,this thesis takes Book 4-6 in the series of senior high school books“Experiencing Chinese(Thai version)” as the main research object,through through quantitative research,high-frequency word statistics and other methods,from the functional,normative,aesthetic,empathy and lower dimensions of the text of the theme,content,illustrations conveyed by the“Image of China”for a more comprehensive classification and sorting,based on the questionnaire,interview and the author’s teaching experience in Thailand,such putting forward some suggestions on the compilation and use of Chinese image in Thai Chinese textbooks.
