From the end of the 17 th century to the second half of the 19 th century, the "evangelical revival movement" of Protestantism swept through Europe and the United States, and overseas missionary movements gradually emerged. On September7,1807,the London Missionary Society sent Morrison,a Protestant missionary,to China to start the Protestant missionary movement in China. At that time, the Qing government implemented a strict policy of banning religion, and the difficulties of being in a foreign country, language barriers, and his life, economy, travel and other difficulties made Morrison’s missionary career in China difficult, and he could only translate the Bible and compile the English-Chinese dictionary eight years before coming to China. At the end of 1814,the London Missionary Society sent Millet to China as Morrison’s assistant.Immediately,Morrison and Milne decided to set up a mission station at Maloka(Malacca). The two then jointly formulated the "Ultra Ganges Missionary Union" as a strategic deployment for Protestant missionaries in China.Under the guidance of the Ultra Ganges Missionary Union,Protestant missionaries represented by Morrison,Milne,Medhurst and Bridgman drew lessons from Catholics in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties and carried out many educational and literary auxiliary teaching activities. They established the Anglo-Chinese Academy, and founded a variety of Chinese and foreign periodicals and newspapers, such as Chinese Monthly Magazine,The Indo-Chinese Repository,Chinese Serial,The Chinese Repository,News of All Nations,"Prince of Wales’ Island Gazette" and other Chinese and foreign language newspapers and periodicals, starting from the bottom of society, and publicizing Christian doctrine to the public through newspapers, hospitals, and schools. The original intention of the series of missionary activities carried out by the The Ultra-Ganges Missions were to cultivate missionary personnel and spread religion, but its written missionary activities can be described as the source of religious newspapers and periodicals in China. The published publications have brought a large number of Western culture, world geography, scientific and technological knowledge, printing technology, etc.,providing vivid examples for the start and development of local newspapers and periodicals in China, introducing the concept of modern Western newspapers and periodicals, and playing a great role in shaping local newspapers and periodicals in China.trained local Chinese newspapermen represented by Liang Gongfa,Rong Sande and Cai Gao;It has become a bridge between learning from the West and gradually learning from the East and cultural exchanges between China and the West. From its founding in 1817 to its dissolution in 1841,The Ultra-Ganges Missions had a profound impact on the spread of Chinese and Western culture,Chinese social change, and Chinese and foreign intellectual circles.
