Taking the western protestant missionaries as the breakthrough point, this thesis tries to clarify the outstanding contributions made by Robert Morrison in19th century. By organizing and summarizing the background of missionaries, experiences of language acquisition and cultural transmission strategies, the author focuses on cross-cultural techniques in his dictionary compilation, translation and early bilingual education in China.As one of the vital representatives of Missionary Culture in China, Morrison overcomes various difficulties and tries his best in the second language acquisition. Because of the outstanding contributions in his bilingual researches, he played a leading role during the transition period of Chinese literature from the classical to its modern vernacular in19th century. Although the direct purpose of his missionaries is to spread Christianity, his missionary activity has greatly promoted the cultural and linguistic exchanges between China and the West.By introducing the basic theories of Reception in translation, this thesis, moreover, re-surveys the translation process of Bible. And the author analyzes the translation strategies and discusses the effective cultural exchanges in multi-cultural and linguistic backgrounds of China.Furthermore, this thesis tries to figure out the useful mode for the current cross-cultural communication, and it's divided into six parts.The first part is the introduction, which talks about the significances, methods, and innovation of this thesis.The second part is the literature review, which mainly talks about the basic theories of missionary culture and the reception aesthetics in translation.The third part talks about the circumstances of Morrison's early language and religious studies, which looks back his second language learning environment and reduces the Chinese teaching conditions in19th century of England.The fourth part, including two sections, explores the Morrison's Chinese studying and researching works in China. In the beginning, the author makes an investigation of his language learning in China. Then, it summarizes the characteristics and effects of The Dictionary of the Chinese Language during the transition period of Chinese literature from the classical to its modern vernacular in19th century.The fifth part analyzes Morrison's translation process of Bible and reviews the bilingual education in19th century of Asia. In the beginning, the author tries to figure out his cultural preferences and translation strategies. Then, it talks about the characteristics and significance of Anglo-Chinese College.The last part is the conclusion, which indicates some inspirations that we could draw from today.
