| Shi Guangnan was a famous composer in China, known as the "People’s Musician".He composed two operas in his lifetime,"The Hurt Locker" and "Qu Yuan",of which "The Hurt Locker" was the first opera he composed. It was rehearsed by the China Opera and Dance Theatre and premiered at the People’s Theatre in Beijing in 1981.There had been no successful adaptation of the novel into an opera before then, and its heavy singing and extreme vocalisation were particularly rare in the opera world. The opera tells the tragic love story of Juan Sheng,an intellectual who, influenced by the spirit of the May Fourth Movement, courageously rebels against the feudal system and breaks away from worldly rituals, and Zijun,a woman of the same "new era",who eventually comes to a "sad" end.The story of a tragic love affair with a woman of the same "new age",Zijun, who eventually comes to a "sad" and "dead" end.The author collects, collates and researches the relevant literature and books on the Internet, and combines his knowledge of music with his own studies over the years, using the documentary method, the audiovisual data analysis method, the literature induction method and the practical method to interpret the characterisation and singing analysis of Juan Sheng in the opera "The Hurt Locker" from multiple perspectives,so that future generations can refer to it.The paper consists of the following six parts. In this introduction, the literature is collected, analysed and collated through four aspects : the current situation of Chinese opera,Shi Guangnan’s life and musical composition style, the composition style and character portrayal of The Hurt Locker, and vocal techniques. The five aspects are discussed in terms of the reasons for the selection of the topic, the significance of the study, the review of related studies, the research methodology and the innovations. The first chapter describes the humanistic and artistic background of the opera The Hurt Locker, looking at the development and style of the Chinese opera genre to find the unique style of "Chinese storytelling" combined with "Western techniques" in The Hurt Locker, then examines Shi Guangnan’s artistic path, finding his motives for choosing The Hurt Locker as the subject matter and for using "East meets West" compositional techniques. The second chapter combines a humanistic and artistic context to carry out an ontological study of opera, finding similarities and differences with his lyrical music composition style in a study of the musical stylistic features of The Hurt Locker, finding problems where the orchestra takes up a relatively small part of the story, and analysing the similarities and differences in the literary and musical shaping of the same characters, rendered in different art forms. The third chapter elaborates on the theory of vocal technique in four aspects: breath, resonant cavity, bite and exhale to rhyme, and tenor voice change technique.Using two arias by Juan Sheng,"She Took My Heart" and "Golden Autumn Light" as examples, the use of technique in different works is analysed, and finally common problems of technique in vocal learning are found and solved to give vocal learners a theoretical reference. The fourth chapter discusses the four aspects of the composition structure, vocal treatment, emotional expression and style of She Took My Heart and Golden Autumn Light, and analyses the portrayal of Juan Sheng’s image and voice in the different works in conjunction with the first three chapters. The analysis of the "parts" to the "whole" will give a more accurate grasp of the characterisation and vocalisation. It concludes by describing the influence of the opera The Hurt Locker and the musical character Juan Sheng on the music world and the reflection and understanding of The Hurt Locker, gives an overview of Shi Guangnan’s motivation and musical style, also shows the importance of vocal technique, and finally surfaces the importance of both works for the study of the opera as a whole and summarises the whole essay in a concluding manner. |
