With the development of science and technology and the Internet, the network has gradually become a necessity in life, and the mobile phone has gradually become an indispensable item for people at any time.Mobile phone use has become quite common even among teenagers and has even developed into a new learning and life skill. In China, the number of underage netizens has reached 191 million, and 86.7% of them have their own Internet devices, mainly mobile phones.Mobile phones have brought us a lot of convenience, but the overuse of it has also led to problems such as cell phone addiction. The prevalence rate of mobile phone addiction in China has reached 13.5% to67.0%,among which many teenagers has been addicted to mobile phones due to poor self-control or anxiety, depression and other reasons. At the same time, studies have found that mobile phone addiction also has negative effects on individuals’ emotions, sleep, physical and mental health and social development. To sum up,the relationship between mobile phone addiction and mental health still needs to be further studied. On the one hand, the results of cross-sectional studies provide some evidence for the relationship between them, but few determine the causal relationship between them from a longitudinal perspective. On the other hand, the internal mechanism and protective factors that are beneficial to adolescent development are still worth further exploration and expansion. Therefore, this study will explore the internal mechanism and casual relationship between mobile phone addiction and mental health through cross-sectional and longitudinal research design,in order to find the protective factors of mobile phone addiction among adolescents and reduce the negative effects of addiction among adolescents. In this study, questionnaires were distributed to the first and second grade in junior middle schools as well as in senior schools from Chongqing Province,Hubei Province and Jiangxi Province. The questionnaires included the Short version of the Smartphone Addiction Scale,self-regulation questionnaire,Future orientation scale, and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale 21.A total of 1410 adolescents participated in the cross-sectional study and 504 adolescents participated in the longitudinal study. Two measurements were taken before and after six months respectively.SPSS27.0 was used for descriptive statistical analysis, correlation analysis, difference test and mediating effect test,etc..Mplus8.3 was used for latent variable cross hysteresis model analysis. The main results of this study are as follows:(1)Mobile phone addiction can positively predict the mental health level of adolescents(stress-anxiety-depression),and self-regulation plays a partial mediating role between them, with future orientation as a moderating role in the mediating model.(2)Mobile phone addiction can positively predict the overall level of mobile phone addiction and mental health(stress-anxiety-depression)after six months, and can positively predict the level of stress and anxiety after six months, but the level of depression after six months can’t be predicted;(3)Overall level of mental health(stress-anxiety-depression)could positively predict overall level of mental health six months later, but the mobile phone addiction six months later can’t be predicted. In conclusion, this study found that the more use of mobile phones, the greater stress, anxiety and depression the adolescents will suffer from.Self-regulation and future orientation are protective factors for mobile phone addiction and mental health. The results of this study help us to better understand the relationship between adolescents’ mobile phone use and their mental health,as well as possible protective factors,so as to provide implications for helping adolescents better use mobile phones to promote their development. |
