As the maintainer of social order, the psychological health of police officers is not only related to themselves but also to the effectiveness of the public security team and the stability and harmony of society.Due to the need to accept help from the public while on duty and the high-risk situations they face, police officers remain in a state of high tension for extended periods. If not handled appropriately, this can lead to severe mental health crises.Compassion fatigue is a common phenomenon that affects mental health among those who help others. After long-term contact with victims, police officers may experience compassion fatigue, which can lead to psychological disorders and affect their helping behavior.Self-compassion is a positive and caring attitude towards oneself when faced with failure and personal shortcomings. It is an important psychological protection factor for individuals as it helps individuals deal with negative emotions and establish good interpersonal relationships.Individuals with higher levels of self-compassion can accept their shortcomings, face setbacks and frustrations with a friendly and tolerant attitude, and calmly face negative events.Therefore,self-compassion can effectively alleviate the negative impact of various factors on mental health. This study aimed to explore the psychological health status of grassroots police officers and the impact and intervention of compassion fatigue and self-compassion.Study 1 and Study 2 were conducted. The Self-Compassion Scale,Professional Quality of Life Scale, and SCL-90 Scale were used to measure the level of self-compassion,compassion fatigue, and mental health of the police population.139 grassroots police officers were randomly selected from an area in Hubei Province to explore the basic situation and relationships among self-compassion,compassion fatigue, and mental health among police officers,as well as to examine the mediating role of self-compassion in compassion fatigue and mental health. In Study 2,40 volunteers were recruited and divided into two groups. The experimental group participated in self-compassion group counseling once a week for six weeks, while the control group participated in counseling unrelated to the research topic. After the intervention, all subjects completed the same three questionnaires as Study 1.The results showed that self-compassion plays a completely mediating role in compassion fatigue and mental health. The self-compassion group counseling intervention significantly improved the level of self-compassion of the police community, and this improvement maintained the level of mental health. In conclusion, this study provides insights into the psychological health status of grassroots police officers and the impact and intervention of compassion fatigue and self-compassion.The findings suggest that promoting self-compassion can be an effective intervention to alleviate the negative impact of compassion fatigue and maintain the mental health of police officers.
