| This translation practice report is based on the book New Theory of Play and Literary Texts by Professor Huang Kaihong of Southwest University of Science and Technology. The translated part is the “Theory of Play” application chapter of the book, and the translated content is about 15,000 words. The book analyzes six American literary works by combining the New Theory of Play with Mr.Nie Zhenzhao’s Ethical Literary Criticism. The author accomplished this task with the help of translation tools, parallel texts, and a glossary.Since the text has a large number of Chinese idioms and words and sentences with Chinese language characteristics, and the source text is informative, its purpose is to provide information, express the original author’s feelings and the author’s ideological content, and also pay attention to the faithfulness of the original author’s language style. Therefore, the translator adopts the functional equivalence theory proposed by Eugene A.Nida, focusing on the translation language and whether the translation conveys the information of the original text faithfully and fluently. In response to the problems encountered in the translation process, the translator adopts the following translation methods. At the lexical level, the translators adopted the translation methods of idiomatic, paraphrase translation, and conversion;the methods of shift, division, combination, and inversion are adopted at the syntactic level. The report shows that the functional equivalence theory is a good guide for translating such texts with Chinese language characteristics and can significantly preserve the original text’s linguistic characteristics to the greatest extent. It also summarizes some translation techniques and methods to solve the problems encountered in translating such texts and forms some typical translation case examples. This report was divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction to the translation project, mainly describing the background of the project, the analysis of the original text, and the structure of the practice report. The second part introduces the whole translation process, which is divided into three steps: the pre-translation stage, the in-translation stage, and the post-translation stage. The third part is the case study, which is also a crucial part of this translation practice report. The fourth part is the translation quality assessment. The last part is the conclusion. |
