| Promoting the new people-centered urbanization is the key path for China’s modernization development and an important measure to achieve high-quality development. The permanent migration of migrant workers to cities is the micro basis for realizing the new urbanization. And from the relevant survey, the current migrant workers to the city permanent migration willingness is not high.Early studies on migration economics pointed out that the transfer of farmers to cities mainly reflected the difference in expected income of cities, but new migration economists represented by Stark pointed out that migrant workers’ relative deprivation status relative to the original reference frame(such as villages)was the cause of their migration. However, when farmers enter the city, the reference frame replacement may occur, with urban residents as a new reference frame to form a new relative poverty, and then affect their permanent migration willingness of the city.Based on the relative poverty hypothesis, his paper matches China Migrants Dynamic Survey in 2017 with district(county, city)macro data, measures the multidimensional relative poverty of migrant workers, and discusses the influence of multidimensional relative poverty of migrant workers in urban residents and the mechanism of action. The study finds that MRP intensity of migrant workers is relatively high taking urban residents as reference group, and the relative poverty in two dimensions of health care and social security is the main reason. The increase of MRP intensity has significantly inhibited the permanent migration willingness of migrant workers. The relative poverty of education and health care dimensions inhibited permanent migration willingness of migrant workers, bur the relative poverty of social security and consumption expenditure dimensions has no significant inhibitory effect. The individual heterogeneity test shows that MRP has a stronger inhibitory effect on permanent migration willingness for inter-provincial migration, having higher income, and short-term migrant workers.Research on group heterogeneity test finds that the inhibit effect of MRP on permanent migration willingness is stronger for migrant workers who have labor contracts,self-employed,older generations, and stay in city for the purpose of having better educational opportunities for their children, and but it promotes permanent migration willingness of migrant workers without labor contract. The mechanism analysis shows that status identity in urban identity plays an intermediary role in MRP inhibiting permanent migration willingness, and MRP inhibits permanent migration willingness of migrant workers by suppressing geographical identity, and improving status identity and geographic identity of migrant workers can alleviate the inhibitory effect of MRP on permanent migration willingness. This study believes that we should effectively alleviate the multidimensional relative poverty of migrant workers, reduce the obstacles to the permanent urban migration of migrant workers, and promote their transformation from flow rather than migration to permanent migration. |
