Abstract/Summary:
Myanmar entered a new era of democratic transition under President U Thein Sein Government.During the President U Thein Sein’s administration, many reforms which are political, economic, and administration reforms were carried out.Myanmar also reviewed its diplomacy and improved relations with international community. Its bilateral relations with major powers including China seemed to have some changes.Myanmar-China relations could be traced back in centuries.China has been the closest neighbor and major economic partner of Myanmar for decades. The two countries are cooperating in various sectors bilaterally and in regional organizations.Based on the circumstances, the thesis aims to examine nature of Myanmar-China Relations under the U Thein Sein government and to find out Myanmar’s motivating factors on their bilateral ties.China-Myanmar relations was not a rosy picture throughout their history. The President U Thein Sein government implemented policies that still benefited the interests of both countries in the development of the Sino-Myanmar relations. The research found out that political and socio-economic relations are critical in Myanmar-China relations.Besides, the findings pointed out that there are three domestic motivations for Myanmar’s behaviors on their bilateral relationship. These motivations are China’s role in Myanmar peace process, economic development and President U Thein Sein government’s needs for legitimacy and image. These factors permit Myanmar-China cooperation to endure despite changes in Myanmar’s domestic politics.Actually,it is true that they did overcome several issues in the history of their relationship through constructive engagement and friendship.Similarly, both countries are willing seriously to make positive interactions while maintain strategic partnership and Pauk-Phaw relationship. The study has found out that both China and Myanmar have greatly been benefitted through the establishment of strong bilateral relationship based on trade and investment, connectivity, constructions of infrastructure including ports and special economic zones.
