The Xiangjiang Campaign was the most powerful and crucial battle between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party since the Long March of the Central Red Army,occupying a pivotal position in the history of the Chinese revolution.During the Xiangjiang Campaign,in addition to the contest of military strategy,the Kuomintang and the Communist Party also included the struggle of public opinion positions.Starting from the news and periodicals during the Xiangjiang Campaign,this paper intends to conduct an in-depth analysis of the relevant reporting content and reporting characteristics,deepen the multiple understandings of the Xiangjiang Campaign and the spirit of the Xiangjiang Campaign,and broaden the academic research on the Xiangjiang Campaign.This article places the Xiangjiang Campaign in the context of the times at that time,first starting from the three aspects of the number of news reports,the attributes and characteristics of relevant newspapers and periodicals,and the heat analysis of the reports on the Xiangjiang Campaign,and analyzes the relevant overview of the Xiangjiang Campaign in the news and public opinion reports at that time,and concludes: Under the background of internal and external troubles,the outcome of the Xiangjiang Campaign is related to the trend of the political situation,and as a hot spot of public opinion,it has attracted extensive attention from major newspapers and media.However,due to the different nature and political stance of each newspaper and periodical,the angle and content of its reports are also quite different: under the blockade of public opinion by the Kuomintang,the Chinese Communist Party’s reports mainly focus on guiding the building of the Red Army and mobilizing the struggle of the Red Army and the masses of the people;Out of the need to maintain its own rule,the Kuomintang took the policy of "bringing in the outside world must first settle the inside" as the guideline for its public opinion propaganda,and its reports always revolved around "suppressing bandits" to gain public support;Under the watchful eye of the political situation,private commercial newspapers and periodicals adopted a tendency to report in support of the Nanjing Nationalist Government,which undoubtedly promoted the formation of the Kuomintang’s public opinion that "bandits are used to save the country and bandits are used to build."Based on the above collation and comparison of reports belonging to different interest groups,and from the analysis of the characteristics of hot spots and general concerns of news and periodicals in the course of the Xiangjiang Campaign,changes in the military strength of the Kuomintang and the Communist Party,and the choice of the strategic line of the Kuomintang and the Communist Party,it is reflected that the formation and differences in the characteristics of the reports of various newspapers and periodicals are based on the basis favorable to the subordinate parties or interest groups.The focus of the newspapers and periodicals and the propaganda effect produced not only played an important role in the public opinion struggle between the Chinese and Communist parties during the Xiangjiang Campaign,but also reflected the public opinion orientation formed by the national newspapers and periodicals that "resisting Japan must first suppress bandits" and its characteristics of basing itself on safeguarding the ruling position of the Nanjing National Government.Finally,based on the previous analysis,this paper argues that under the guidance of public opinion that "anti-Japanese resistance must first suppress bandits",the difficulties faced by the Communist Party of China are reflected in three aspects: public opinion pressure,external challenges and the consolidation of its own troops,and on this basis,it deeply analyzes the spirit of the Xiangjiang Campaign condensed by the Communist Party of China in the predicament and the value of the times provided by the spirit of the Xiangjiang Campaign in the context of the new era to promote the development of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
