| The year 2020 will be the most significant year for poverty eradication, with the announcement of the elimination of absolute poverty, which means that our working people have solved the basic problem of survival, but the problem of relative poverty still requires our attention. The requirement to "consolidate and expand the achievements of poverty eradication" requires a better management of relative poverty. At present,China’s war on poverty has been a success, and since the 18 th National People’s Congress,we have been able to build a moderately prosperous society, the problem of relative poverty has gradually emerged. As older people’s physiological functions decline and diseases increase, their risk of falling into relative poverty and returning to poverty increases, while children’s support behaviours can alleviate the relative poverty of older individuals,so it has theoretical value and practical significance to explore children’s support behaviours on relative poverty in old age. This paper uses the 2018 CFPS data to measure and decompose the relative poverty of older individuals using the A-F method, and uses the entropy method to derive a composite score for child support behaviour, then builds a binary Logit and Probit model, while testing whether there is an endogeneity problem by setting instrumental variables, followed by a heterogeneity analysis. The findings of the empirical analysis are: first, older individuals in rural areas have a higher probability of being at risk.According to the multidimensional poverty indicators set in this paper, the incidence of poverty among older individuals in 2018 was 32.8% when k = 0.4,at which point the incidence of economic poverty was highest, with the sum of an older individual’s annual income from work, pension income and financial support from their children being less than $4,000.Ageing leads to a progressively greater probability of poverty in terms of self-care,with the greatest probability of poverty in terms of health status occurring between the ages of 70 and80,and a greater probability of mental poverty faced between the ages of 60 and 70.Secondly,child support behaviour can significantly reduce the relative poverty levels of older individuals, particularly in terms of financial support and emotional comfort from children.Financial support from children can significantly reduce the probability of relative poverty among older individuals, while an increase in the level of care from children can increase the probability of relative poverty among older individuals, and spiritual comfort from children can reduce the probability of relative poverty among older individuals. After overcoming endogeneity through instrumental variables and propensity score matching, this paper still holds that child support behaviour directly mitigates the occurrence of relative poverty among older individuals.Thirdly,in terms of regional, household and gender differences, child support behaviour has a more significant effect on alleviating the relative poverty of older individuals in the eastern region, followed by the central region, and a less significant effect in the western region.Due to traditional thinking, child support behaviour is more effective in reducing poverty in rural areas, and child support behaviour is more effective in reducing poverty among male older individuals.Based on the findings of this study, this paper proposes three policy recommendations: firstly,to strengthen the level of social security for older individuals in rural areas;secondly,to raise the awareness of children’s support for older individuals;and thirdly,to give full play to the role of the community. |
