Founded in 1854,and through more than 100 years of stormy changes, the Republican Party has played an important role in the U.S.political arena as one of the two major parties.Since entering the 21st century, the Republican Party has been stuck in a multidimensional quagmire. These predicaments are mainly manifested in poor electoral performance at the national election level and a decline in voter’s party identification.Increasingly conservative policy positions of the Republican Party, its ideological drift to the right and its radical overtones are evident, and the intensification of intra-party factional struggles, the rise of radical forces, and external threats from the Democratic Party. And the obvious nationalist and conservative overtones of foreign policy, and the sharp turn in Sino-American relations during the Trump administration. The Republican Party is in a deep predicament in multiple dimensions, which makes the future development of the Republican Party face many risks and uncertainties. The Republican Party not only has to consider how to gain more ground in elections, but also has to face the deepening divisions within its party and challenges from the Democratic Party, which has a profound impact on the Republican Party’s policy stance.Internal affairs affect diplomacy, and The Trump administration’s diplomatic shift to increase competition with China has made the Sino-U.S.relations remain in the doldrums so far. This paper uses a variety of research methods. The dilemma of the American Republican Party and its roots are analyzed from a holistic perspective. The first part begins with an overall overview of the evolution of the Republican Party,as well as a general description of the Republican Party’s voter base today,in terms of their distribution by race, religion, age, and region. The second part analyzes and sorts out the current crisis faced by the U.S.Republican Party at the party identity level. The declining voter support of the U.S.Republican Party and the decrease of voters’ identification with the Republican Party;the recessionary economic environment affects the voter composition of the Republican Party and promotes its ideological transformation; In addition, the Republican Party’s current policy positions are unable to obtain the majority of voters’ approval, making it more difficult for the Republican Party to gain voters’ support and recognition as a challenge. The third part elaborates the current policy positions of the Republican Party on economy, welfare, society and foreign affairs,as well as the current dilemma faced by the Republican Party at the ideological level.Since its fusion with American conservatism, the Republican Party has been using it as the theoretical basis of the party. However,in recent years, the Republican Party’s ideology has continuously shifted to the right, and even tends to develop in the direction of ultra-conservatism,which has a negative impact on the party and the American political environment. The fourth part elaborates on the crisis of the Republican Party’s party struggle and the crisis of leadership selection. The Republican Party’s current intra-party struggle has intensified, that is,the radical forces within the party impacted the internal party establishment, resulting in a serious split in the party.Competition with the Democratic Party outside the party is at a disadvantage and not very competitive. As well as the leadership selection has become a major problem for the Republican Party, the selection process is set up in a way that makes it difficult for high quality candidates to win.The Republican Party’s policy positions in recent years also have a tendency to guide the radicals, with policies being introduced for partisan interests, leading to a more polarized bipartisan relationship. The fifth part analyzes the strategic dilemma of the Republican Party, the failure of the Republican foreign policy. The foreign policy of the Republican presidential administration is more nationalistic and protectionist, and these features are very obvious during the Trump administration. The withdrawal of the United States from several multilateral organizations, the separation of its traditional allies, the pursuit of great power competition, resulting in a decline in the international credibility of the United States, impact on multilateral mechanisms, and add to the instability of the world situation. In the current political system of the United States, neither the Republican Party nor the Democratic Party is a real winner, and the loose system of party organization makes it difficult for the party consciousness to be highly organized, and betrayal of the party by its members often occurs. The U.S.electoral system makes political parties more inclined to gain the support of marginalized groups in primaries, while the Electoral College system makes it difficult for genuine public opinion to be represented.Factional struggles within the Republican Party and the fight with the Democratic Party, which negatively affect the development of the Republican Party,as well as increase the polarization of American politics.Political polarization has spread to the policy level, with partisan interests taking precedence over national interests, making decisions difficult and controversial, and foreign policy becoming a tool for party competition, which challenges the democratic nature of the United States and creates misjudgment of great power relations, affecting the stability of the international environment. The Republican Party needs to reform and innovate to face the emergence of many dilemmas.
