As China’s population aging continues to deepen, the policy of postponing retirement is imperative. At present, many places in China have begun to try to implement the deferred retirement policy, and the practice of enterprise employees’ deferred retirement has attracted much attention.Through theoretical analysis and data analysis, this paper examines the impact of the number of children on employees’ willingness to postpone retirement. The theoretical analysis of this paper believes that the decision of employees’ deferred retirement is essentially a family joint labor supply decision that takes into account the income discount in the life cycle,in which the number of children plays an important role.Based on the theoretical model and literature review, this paper uses CHARLS data, uses the random forest model and Light GBM model to screen the most important factors affecting the willingness to postpone. On the one hand,it examines the importance of the influence of the number of children on the willingness to postpone retirement, and verifies the conclusion of this paper. On the one hand, the selected important variables are included in the empirical analysis as control variables to eliminate the endogeneity to the greatest extent. The empirical analysis part of this paper uses CHARLS2011-2018 panel data to examine the impact of the number of children on employees’ willingness to postpone retirement. The benchmark regression model found that the increase in the number of children would significantly increase the willingness of employees to postpone the long-term and short-term retirement. The heterogeneity analysis part found that there were significant differences between groups with different hukou, different children’s living status and different children’s living aid status, which was due to the differences in family economic status. The mechanism test found that family consumption played a partial intermediary role in the impact of the number of children on the willingness to postpone retirement. This intermediary effect has passed the robustness test and continues to play a significant role in different levels of heterogeneity grouping. It is suggested to pay attention to the impact of children’s status and family economic conditions on the willingness of enterprise employees to postpone retirement when promoting the deferred retirement policy, and to implement flexible policies. At the same time, attention should be paid to reducing procedural costs, improving the work benefits of deferred workers, enhancing the acceptance of the public for the deferred retirement policy, and ensuring the smooth implementation of the deferred retirement policy.
