| With the development of the economy and society and the continuous improvement of medical standards, chronic diseases have gradually become one of the most important factors affecting people’s physical health. The role of unhealthy habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and lazy and unhealthy eating habits in inducing chronic diseases has been widely recognized. How to develop a healthy lifestyle has become one of the important topics in medical sociology research and has achieved fruitful results.Research has found that people’s lifestyle is closely related to their socioeconomic status, and people of different classes have different choices for healthy lifestyle; However, research on the impact of class differentiation within the rural population on healthy lifestyles has not yet formed a relatively recognized conclusion. This study takes the healthy lifestyle of farmers as the research object, and discusses the performance, class differences and formation mechanism of the healthy lifestyle of farmers from the perspective of social stratification. The study used binary logit regression and latent category analysis to process the CFPS 2016 data, supplemented by on-site interviews in Jiangxi in November 2022 and Shandong in January 2023.The study found that, first,in terms of macro stratification structure, socioeconomic status influenced farmers’ healthy lifestyle choices.Overall,in terms of occupational stratification and educational attainment,it showed that the higher the socioeconomic status, the healthier the farmers’ lifestyle. However, the heads of units with high occupational prestige in the villages tended not only to exercise physically but also to smoke and drink alcohol, and were not the group with the healthiest lifestyles;the professionals and technicians in the villages had the healthiest lifestyles. After controlling for occupational and educational variables, farmers show that the more income they have, the less healthy their lifestyles are.Second, community context and occupational context under the constraint of social stratification structure have an impact on farmers’ healthy lifestyle choices. In the rural community context, community social capital is two-sided,and more social capital makes farmers more likely to exercise on the one hand and to smoke on the other. In the occupational context, the structural constraints in the work context of those in charge of the organization make them need to socialize and relieve stress through alcohol and tobacco, and therefore are more likely to choose an unhealthy lifestyle than professionals and technicians.Other occupational groups also have their own microcontexts to support their lifestyles.Thirdly, individual motivation under structural influence has an impact on farmers’ healthy lifestyles. The impact of personal agency is divided into positive and negative components, with good personal agency both promoting an increased likelihood of exercise behavior and making farmers more likely to smoke and drink excessively. The research points out that the formation process of farmers’ healthy lifestyle is jointly constructed by the social stratification structure, life situation and individual initiative. The social stratification structure constrains farmers’ life opportunities, shapes different situations of farmers’ lifestyle, and affects farmers’ subjective lifestyle choices.Exploring the formation mechanism of farmers’ healthy lifestyle requires interpreting multiple factors. |
