With the development of information technology,web-based homework has become more and more popular among educators and students in recent years.However,many scholars doubt the effectiveness of web-based homework.In the past ten years,researchers have made more experiments to compare the effects of web-based homework and traditional paper-and-pencil homework on academic performance.At the same time,researchers are interested in the role of feedback timing in web-based homework,and some discussions have been conducted,but the results are inconsistent.Is there any difference in the effect of feedback timing on students’ academic performance? Which feedback timing is more conducive to student learning?In order to synthesize the research about the difference between web-based homework and traditional paper-and-pencil homework and the possible influencing factors,21 original papers were analyzed,involving 42 independent samples,the total sample size was 6894.The results of meta-analysis showed that there was a significant difference between web-based homework and traditional homework,and the Hedges’ s g was 0.523.The difference of learning effect between them is influenced by region,measuring method,subjects and number of teachers.The advantage of web-based homework may lie in the timing of feedback.Two experiments were designed to investigate the effect of feedback timing of homework on students’ test scores.Experiment 1 was a single-factor random experiment,the independent variable was the feedback time(Immediate / delay),and the dependent variable was the test accuracy.The results show that the timing of homework feedback has a significant effect on academic performance,and delayed feedback is better than immediate feedback.In order to eliminate the confusion of feedback view and to test the generality of the results obtained in Experiment 1,Experiment 2 was designed,in which the independent variables were feedback opportunity(immediate / delay)and feedback view(request / choice),and the dependent variable was test accuracy.The results show that the main effect of feedback timing and feedback viewing is significant,the interaction between them is significant,and the effect of feedback timing on test results is influenced by feedback viewing conditions.
