In the inquiry learning method,learners independently seek answers and collect required information around certain questions,and texts materials with the guidance of teachers.Many English learners regard reading comprehension as an important source of acquiring new language knowledge,but the rigidity of the classroom learning model makes reading learning an exam-oriented skill training.This paper aims to verify the effectiveness of inquiry learning in improving senior one students’ English reading,and three research questions are as follows:(1)What is the current English reading situation of senior-one students in Urumqi No.4high school?(2)What are the effects of 5E mode Inquiry Learning on students’ reading scores? What aspects of reading comprehension will be affected by inquiry learning?(3)What are the senior-one students’ attitudes towards the 5E model of inquiry learning in Urumqi No.4 high school.Therefore,a pre-questionnaire and a reading pre-test are conducted,and then the author attempted to apply inquiry learning(Engaging,Exploration,Explanation,Elaboration,Evaluation)to English reading classes for four months.Lastly,the author conducted a post-questionnaire,another reading post-test,and interviews to know the students’ s attitudes and comprehension scores towards the 5E model of inquiry learning in Urumqi No.4 high school.Fifty students of the experimental class from senior-one in No.4 high school participated in the inquiry learning process.The results illustrate that:(1)Students of senior-one have fairly little interest in English reading comprehension and have not grasped the reading methods and strategies effectively which leads to below-average scores on the reading test.(2)After the experiment of the 5E model of inquiry learning,the reading comprehension score in the experimental class is higher than in the control class.Learners’ performances for different aspects of reading comprehension(Contents Inferring,Words Meaning Inferring,Summary,and evaluation)have been strikingly enhanced.(3)The majority of students’ attitudes towards English reading have made some changes in certain aspects according to the results of interviews and post-questionnaire.Thus,the author concluded that students’ capabilities of self-explore and knowledge-construction have been largely extended in the 5E model of the inquiry learning process,so it is conducive to improving student’s reading comprehension scores and interest in English reading class,at the same time,the 5E model of inquiry learning has a certain effect on teaching English reading.
