| National English Curricular Standards(2017 edition)states that English key competencies, which is composed of language competence, cultural disposition, thinking quality and learning ability,is the ultimate goal of English language teaching.Textbooks play a key role in cultivating students’ English key competencies and the quality of English textbooks has a direct impact on students’ overall development. Therefore,in order to make full use of textbooks and promote the cultivation of students’ English key competencies,it is necessary to analyze the embodiment and distribution of English key competencies in New Standard English(2019 edition). On the basis of English key competencies and holistic education theory, this study selects the compulsory Book 1-3 of New Standard English(2019 edition)as the research subjects and adopts text analysis, attempting to explore the following two questions:(1)How are the English key competencies reflected in New Standard English for Senior High(2019 edition)? And(2)How are the English key competencies distributed in New Standard English for Senior High(2019 edition)compulsory Book 1-3?The results of the study show that:(1)The proportion and distribution of English key competencies in NSE(2019 edition)are reasonable, which not only follows the rules of learners’ cognitive development, but also reflects the interrelationship of the four English key competencies.Meanwhile, the activities and exercises designed in NSE(2019 edition)are suitable for students’ English level at different grades, reflecting the student-centered teaching concept.(2)On the whole, language competence takes the largest proportion, followed by cultural disposition.Thinking quality accounts for the third, and learning ability takes the smallest part.(3)In language knowledge, vocabulary takes the largest proportion, followed by grammar, while discourse accounts for the smallest proportion. In language skills, reading possesses the highest frequency, and writing takes the smallest proportion.(4)When it comes to cultural disposition, the highest frequency appears in cultural knowledge, followed by cultural understanding and cross-cultural awareness. The coverage and selection of cultural contents in NSE(2019 edition)can be described as well-rounded,but the proportion of native-language culture is relatively small.(5)As far as thinking quality is concerned, logical thinking takes the largest proportion, followed by creative thinking, while critical thinking owns the lowest frequency. The questions designed in NSE(2019 edition)vary in complexity and go from convergent to divergent, which is in line with students’ cognitive level.(6)As for learning ability, learning interest accounts for the largest proportion, while resource management takes the smallest proportion of the total.According to the above research results, the author puts forward some suggestions for both textbook compilers and teachers.Suggestions for textbook compilers are(1)More discourse knowledge needs to be added to help students grasp the structure of reading materials more accurately;(2)More Chinese culture needs to be embodied to enhance students’ cultural confidence and sense of national identity;and(3)More creative and critical activities need to be designed to encourage students to bring forth innovative ideas and form their own judgment standards.Teachers are to(1)Continuously develop professional competence to deepen the understanding of English key competencies;(2)Take the initiative to supplement the insufficient content of teaching materials, and carry out more creative and critical thinking activities so as to better develop and utilize textbooks;and(3)Help students to explore their own learning strategies and cultivate their awareness of autonomous learning. |
