A Study Of Group Work On Psychological Crisis Of Caregivers Of Mentally Retarded Children

Mental retardation is an irreversible disorder,accompanied by the life of people with mental retardation,and the carers ’ responsibility is a long way to go.Mentally disabled children’s caregivers undertake many responsibility,such as the child care,education,rehabilitation,escort,in this process tends to bear a lot of psychological pressure,suffer a timely psychological crisis.If there is no immediate attention and handling will not only has a great influence on themselves,but also have no benefit to the rehabilitation development of mentally retarded children.However,in China’s social policies and services,there is little social attention to the caregivers of children with intellectual disabilities,and psychological intervention services are absent.In this study,69 caregivers of mentally retarded children were investigated on the degree of mental crisis by using the questionnaire of mental crisis status of mentally retarded children,an in-depth interview was conducted among 9 caregivers of mentally retarded children.Through the investigation,we know that the mental crisis of the caregivers of mentally retarded children is manifested in three aspects,namely,anxiety and helplessness,negative thinking and withdrawal behavior.The factors influencing mental crisis of caregivers of mentally retarded children include wrong cognition of crisis source,negative coping behavior and weak social support.Under the principles of focusing on past success,solution-oriented,exception-oriented,present and future,“Snowball”effect,the author uses solution focused brief treatment techniques and group work methods to help caregivers of children with mental retardation to acquire rational cognition and adjust negative behavior from four aspects: focusing on changing goals,reinterpreting crisis events,seeking exceptional experiences,and constructing peer support,improve the state of psychological crisis.Through the research,it is found that the younger and the low educational level of the psychological crisis of the caregivers of children with intellectual disabilities is more obvious and deserves attention;cognitive bias is an important factor affecting the degree of mental crisis of caregivers of children with intellectual disabilities;solution focused brief treatment techniques can effectively improve the psychological crisis status of caregivers with mental disabilities who are highly motivated to change.At the same time,the author puts forward some suggestions from the construction stage,rest stage and positive feedback stage to promote the development of social work practice mode.
