As one of the core competencies in mathematics, computational ability is a fundamental skill necessary for learning mathematics, and it has a significant impact on students’ other core competencies and learning in other subjects. The eighth grade is a crucial period for the development of students’ mathematical computation ability. This study aims to investigate the current status of mathematical computation ability among second-year junior high school students, analyze the factors that influence computational ability, and propose strategies for cultivating the computational ability of eighth-grade students. This study employed literature review, testing, questionnaire survey, and interview methods.Firstly,an evaluation framework for eighth-grade students’ operation ability was constructed. Then, test papers and questionnaires on mathematical operation ability were prepared for eighth-grade students, and a survey was conducted on 169 eighth-grade students in a middle school in Yangzhou city. The data obtained from the tests were collected and organized.Through the use of the interview method, four middle school mathematics teachers were interviewed. Finally, the test results and interview data were analyzed comprehensively to analyze the current status and influencing factors of eighth-grade students’ mathematical computational ability.Through the investigation and analysis, the current status of eighth-grade students’mathematical computational ability is as follows:(1)The overall level of computational ability among eighth-grade students is at level 2,with a small number of students reaching level 3.There is a significant room for improvement in students’ computational ability.(2)There is no significant difference in computational ability among eighth-grade students from different genders.(3)In terms of computational components, the score rates for identifying operational objects and meanings and estimation are relatively high, while the score rates for selecting operational strategies, mastering operational methods, and simplifying operational processes are relatively low.(4)In terms of computational content, the score rates for statistics and probability, and equations and inequalities are relatively high, while the score rates for numbers and formulas, functions, and graphics and geometry are relatively low. This indicates that students face difficulties in computational abilities related to numbers and formulas, functions, and graphics and geometry. The main factors influencing the mathematical computational ability of eighth-grade students are as follows:(1)Non-intellectual factors:students’ low interest and motivation in learning, and anxiety towards complex problems;(2)Poor computational habits, mainly in poor problem analysis, answer formulation, use of scratch paper, and checking habits;(3)Inability to correctly attribute computational errors;(4)Weak foundation and incomplete understanding of fundamental knowledge;(5)Lack of proficiency in understanding and applying mathematical thinking methods.Based on the above research results, the following recommendations are proposed to improve the mathematical computational ability of eighth-grade students:(1)Focus on developing non-intellectual factors:help students overcome their fear of difficulties, stimulate students’ interest in learning, guide students to attribute errors correctly, and cultivate good computational habits;(2)Emphasize the teaching of algorithms and mathematical principles;(3)Pay attention to the students’ computational processes;(4)Emphasize the infusion of mathematical thinking methods;(5)Value the cultivation of mathematical thinking quality.
