China is building a basic education curriculum system aimed at developing students’ core literacy. At the junior high school stage, statistics and probability are listed as key components of the compulsory education mathematics curriculum, providing a preliminary understanding of the significance of understanding the real world through data and developing data concepts.Project-based learning is a teaching method in which teachers design projects based on the core knowledge of disciplines or cross disciplines, organize activities, promote the real situation of project activities, and then students explore issues independently or cooperatively.Through situational experience, they construct problems independently, ultimately forming problem solutions or products, obtaining core knowledge, and developing core literacy. As a teaching method, project based learning has authenticity, inquiry, creativity, cooperation, and diversity.Firstly, using the literature analysis method, existing research has shown that project-based learning,as a classroom approach embodying the essence of learning, achieves a deep understanding of knowledge in different disciplines during the completion of projects, and can guide students to discover and solve problems in real situations. The "Mathematics Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022Edition)" suggests focusing on the core literacy of data concepts and exploring projectbased learning in mathematics in the field of statistics and probability. Therefore, the study starts with the current teaching situation of statistics and probability, and investigates and interviews students and teachers through questionnaire and interview methods to understand the existing problems in teaching and learning.Firstly,in terms of teachers:(1)The form of classroom teaching for teachers is single, and the teaching method restricts the development of students’ individuality and creativity;(2)Teachers pay too much attention to the realization of short-term goals, ignoring the formation of knowledge and the comprehensive use of thinking methods;(3)Teachers ignore the study of the compulsory curriculum standard(2022 version)and have a vague understanding of the content requirements, academic requirements, and teaching tips proposed in the curriculum standard.Secondly, for students:(1)Students are prone to computational errors in mathematical operations, and the drawing of statistical charts is not standardized;(2)Students lack the core literacy of data concepts, lack a deep understanding of the essence of statistics and probability knowledge, and have a relatively shallow understanding of their mathematical nature and underlying thinking methods.Based on the analysis of the current situation of project-based learning and teaching, the following suggestions are proposed for the teaching of statistics and probability in junior high schools:(1)implementing the curriculum requirements and grasping core knowledge;(2)Design driving questions to attract students to think;(3)Using cognitive strategies to improve students’ thinking ability;(4)Publish project results to enhance students’ sense of experience;(5)Evaluation runs through the entire process to promote student progress.Based on the teaching suggestions proposed by the research, this paper takes the "description of data" in the statistics and probability section as an example to carry out two sections of teaching design for junior high school statistics and probability project-based learning based on data concepts. Finally, the research results are summarized, and the shortcomings and improvement measures of this study are proposed. It is expected to provide theoretical support for the application of project-based learning in the teaching of statistics and probability in junior high schools.
