Ancient poetry is one of the most unique forms of literature in traditional Chinese culture.Whether we are talking about Chinese literature or studying Chinese language, ancient poetry is always a part of the study, and therefore the teaching of ancient poetry occupies a key position in our secondary language teaching. The teaching of ancient poetry is at all times inseparable from the analysis and investigation of ’meaning’ and ’image’.The scope of ’meaning’ is vast and extensive, encompassing the emotions, thoughts and thinking of the ancients. It covers all aspects of the life of the ancients and naturally includes their philosophical reflections on life, life and the human world. As for the ’elephant’,it refers to the world at large and all beings,i.e.all the objective things that come into the poet’s eyes, thoughts in his mind and drawings in his brush. This paper therefore takes the thinking and perspectiveof time and space as a clue, and takes the imagery of ancient poetry as an entry.point to try to interpret poetry using the analysis of temporal and spatial imagery and to seek new ideas for teaching. The main content of this paper has four chapters. The first chapter stays at the level of teaching materials, firstly, the ancient poetic imagery in the unified version of the high school language textbook is sorted out,its arrangement and distribution characteristics are analysed, and the imagery reflecting temporal and spatial thinking is selected.Secondly, the imagery is categorised from the perspectives of time and space, and the typical verses in the unified version of the senior secondary textbook that have a combination of temporal, spatial and spatio-temporal imagery are sorted out and listed, and the profound meanings of the temporal and spatio-temporal imagery in some typical verses are outlined. In this way,we explore the patterns and characteristics of spatio-temporal thinking and imagery in the aesthetic artistic core of poetry.Once again, the pedagogical value and significance of the appreciation of imagery and imagery clusters under spatio-temporal thinking for the development of students’ core language literacy is explored.Chapter 2 starts from the frontline teaching situation, analyses the current teaching situation and problems reflected by the student questionnaires and teacher interviews, and summarises and concludes the problems and their causes.Based on the second chapter, the third chapter proposes corresponding teaching principles to be followed and teaching strategies that can be drawn upon for teaching spatio-temporal imagery imagery in ancient poetry based on the problems, and finally writes a teaching design for a group reading-style poetry appreciation class based on the principles and strategies, using selected poems by Du Fu from the Unified Edition of the high school language textbook.
