Mr.Qian Mu described the important role of integrating the information of ancient place names in promoting the study of ancient Chinese history in his article Proposed Compiling the Index of Ancient Historical Place Names.Geographical names are important historical teaching resources. The Outline of Chinese and Foreign History(Part I)contains many ancient geographical names.Digging out the historical information and cultural connotation behind geographical names is of great significance to enhance students’ interest in history learning, expand their subject knowledge, improve their thinking level, and deepen their understanding of the cultural connotation of Chinese civilization and enhance their cultural confidence. The ancient place names contained in the Outline of Chinese and Foreign History(I)are characterized by "multiple names in one place and multiple places in one place".If teachers ignore the teaching of ancient place names,it is easy to confuse students’ spatial concepts and misrecord historical knowledge, which is not conducive for students to establish correct spatial concepts and clarify the spatial context of the development of ancient historical events. However, senior high school students need to master the basic knowledge of various subjects, history class time is tight, the task is heavy, the place name teaching is difficult to be carried out in class. Therefore,it is a good choice to establish the appendix of ancient place names for students’ reference, index and self-study,which is more conducive to stimulate students’ main position in history learning. The appendix plays a role of integrating, indexing, supplementing and expanding the text content of the textbook. The appendix system of the current unified edition of high school history textbooks mainly arranges historical events by time series, which has the problem of "emphasizing time over space" and needs to be further improved.By adding the appendix of ancient place names,it is of positive significance to perfect the appendix system of textbooks and promote the further implementation of the core accomplishment of history discipline. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of adding addendum to place names, the paper designs three parts:In order to demonstrate the necessity of addendum to place names, this paper firstly investigated the cognition of place names among the freshmen in senior one of a school in Jinhua City,Zhejiang Province and interviewed the front-line history teachers to study the necessity of adding addendum to ancient place names. The survey shows that students’ cognition of place names in ancient China has some problems, such as confusion of spatial concept and misrecording of historical knowledge. The survey also further obtains students’ intention of the appendix content, which provides a basis for designing the content of place names appendix.Secondly, according to the survey and interview results, the design work of the ancient place names appendix is carried out.The first part of the design work is to carry out research on the design principles of the appendix, mainly by interpreting the requirements of the history curriculum standards for the compilation of textbooks,to explore the principles that should be followed in the design of the place names appendix. The second work of the appendix design is to further implement the design principle to the practice of the place name appendix design, referring to the existing textbooks of the appendix design; Finally, the experimental inspection and return survey of the designed appendices of ancient place names are carried out,and the results of the return visit are analyzed quantitatively,so as to summarize the experience of the design and trial work of the ancient place names appendix.
