Every year,a large number of new students enroll, and as their identities change, they face the new environment with a new attitude.Middle school students are in adolescence from an age perspective, with rapid psychological and physical development.Adolescent students need a correct mindset and psychology to view themselves, which has significant implications for their future lives.Junior high school students face greater learning pressure and heavier academic workload compared to primary school students.Boarding schools reduce the amount of time students spend with their parents and require a certain level of self-management skills. Many surveys have shown that students who are not suitable for school may have some performance.Tired of learning, tense teacher-student relationship, low mood, poor communication with classmates, declining grades, etc. Some students may also choose to skip school, escape the school environment, choose to take a break, and experience campus violence. These behaviors will seriously affect students’ mental health and have a significant negative impact on their future development. This article is based on the author’s field research at Y School in Hunan Province, using group dynamics theory and advantage perspective theory as the foundation, and using the method of group work to intervene in empirical research on the adaptation problem of boarding schools. In the early stage, participatory observation, questionnaire survey, and interview methods were used to understand the adaptation of students to boarding schools, and to analyze the needs and problems of boarding first year students. The maladaptation of first year students boarding at Y school is mainly reflected in poor learning initiative, poor self-care ability in daily life, low ability to adjust emotions to new environments, interpersonal communication, and adapting to school management.Carry out group activities in the mid-term,select team members based on the preliminary investigation and design corresponding group activities to achieve the goal of adapting members participating in group activities to school life.Social workers will apply the advantage perspective theory during group activities to enhance the emotional regulation and self adjustment abilities of freshmen in the face of setbacks and difficulties.Social workers should pay attention to the application of group dynamics theory in carrying out group activities, enhance the cohesion of the group, and promote the smooth progress of group activities. After understanding the different needs of the service population, social workers plan to organize a total of eight themed activities in groups to establish relationships, find a sense of belonging, learn to listen and communicate, express emotions, learn to manage emotions, and stimulate learning motivation. The social workers in the later stage reflect and evaluate the group’s intervention, which on the one hand confirms that the group activities have been effective in addressing the adaptation issues of boarding schools for first year students, and can alleviate the situation of not adapting to boarding schools for first year students. On the other hand, summarize the shortcomings in the process of conducting group work.I hope that the reflection and experience of the author in practical activities can provide some supplement for future group work intervention in school adaptation issues.
