In this study, the phenomenon of social alienation of semi-disabled elderly people in urban areas was studied by using the casework method.Through in-depth interviews and conversations, the author learned that the client’s social alienation was intensified because she suffered from the treatment of chronic disease, the difficulty in mobility, emotional loss and other troubles which were caused by the subjective and objective reasons such as old age and physical illness. After understanding the real situation and emotional state of this group, the author found that the social alienation of this group was the result of the combination of individual and social factors, which specifically manifested itself in three aspects of low self-efficacy,weak social initiative and lack of security. As social workers, how to help semi-disabled elderly people to release their social alienation, whether casework interventions are effective, and what methods can be used to help the group correct their cognitive biases and improve their ability of coping with difficulties to facilitate their social reintegration are the key tasks of this study. The author formulated a three-stage work plan.Firstly, based on the collection of preliminary data, through scale measurement and in-depth conversations, the current situation and manifestations of social alienation of semi-disabled elderly people in K Street were understood from a macro perspective. In addition, the subjective and objective causes of social alienation were analyzed.Secondly,a client who had the common characteristics of social alienation in the region was selected as the serve object of the case intervention.According to the researching and comprehension of the client’s situation,we tried to change the client’s perception through psychological guidance and activities, and tried to build a social support network for the client at three levels of family, peers and social organizations.Through participation in social activities, the clients’ confidence could be rebuilt and her strong sense of social alienation and loneliness could be relieved to promote social integration.Thirdly, whether the case could be closed or not was evaluated according to the achievement of the service objectives, and the results of the service were evaluated by the method of scale measurement to analyze the effectiveness and shortcomings of casework intervention in social alienation of semi-disabled elderly people. The results of the measurement and assessment showed that by virtue of the social worker’s efforts, the client’s psychology and life had improved significantly. However, due to her deep-rooted self-perception and unchangeable physical condition, her social alienation is still higher than that of the general population, making it impossible for her life to return to normal elderly standards. After this case study, the author realized that in order to fundamentally solve the problem of social alienation of semi-disabled elderly people, not only long-term intervention and intensive work are needed, but also the joint action of individuals, families, communities, social work agencies and the government is needed.
