| In 2020,the Chinese curriculum in the elementary school division of Shanghai American School made a pioneering change with the introduction of the Chinese National Curriculum(CNC)——a school-based Chinese language curriculum.For the first time,the Chinese National Curriculum(CNC)is now officially taught in the Chinese Department of the Shanghai American School.This study of the CNC course will not only help international education practitioners to deepen their understanding of the existing Chinese curriculum in the elementary schools of the Shanghai American School,but also provide suggestions for the "overseas promotion" of the Chinese National Curriculum.This study is a qualitative study that uses case studies and interviews to deeply describe the establishment and development of the CNC course in the elementary division of the Shanghai American School.In this study,it concluded that the establishment of the CNC program was related to several factors,including the strong push from parents,U.S.-China diplomatic relationship,the COVID-19 epidemic,the introduction of Chinese National Curriculum.The development of the CNC program was influenced by several internal factors,including students’ language proficiency,school’s support,and teacher cooperation.Finally,this study proposes four recommendations for the overseas promotion of the Chinese National Curriculum,which are:appropriately lowering the language difficulty and offering optional courses in Chinese as a second language;selecting the content of the ministry-edited language textbooks and compressing the teaching time;adopting a skill-oriented assessment method;and providing assessment criteria and syllabus with clear and quantitative entries. |
