| Charity,as an essential part of a socialist-structured and Chinese-style national social security system, plays an important role in maintaining social equality, harmony and stability, which is one of the essential forms of the third distribution. In recent years, with the improvement in the level of economic development, charitable donations have received more and more attention from all walks of life, showing a strong development trend. However, from an international perspective, charitable giving in China is still at a relatively low level,as demonstrated by the lack of enthusiasm of the population and their families to participate in giving, the low average amount of donations and the low proportion of social giving in general.Against this backdrop,in the context of shared prosperity, reinforcing and targeting the giving behaviour of Chinese residents and their families has become an urgent issue to be addressed.Nowadays, donation behaviour has become a common topic for researchers, but most of the previous studies have focused on individual donation as a research object, focusing too much on the impact of demographic characteristics on donation behaviour, while neglecting the impact of external factors,in particular citizens’ participation in social organisations,on donation behaviour. In order to better promote the donation behavior of Chinese residents and their households, this paper examines the impact of residents’ participation in social organizations on their households’ donation behavior and the role of philanthropic values on the impact of participation in social organizations on households’ donation behavior, based on data from the 2018 China Labour Force Dynamics Survey(CLDS)Individual Questionnaire and Household Questionnaire Survey.Using regression analyses and mediating effects tests, the following conclusions were drawn: 1.Citizens’ participation in social organizations has a significant positive effect on household donation behavior;2.Citizens’ philanthropic values have a significant positive effect on household donation behavior;3.Citizens’ participation in social organizations has a significant positive effect on philanthropic values;4.Philanthropic values have a significant positive effect with partial mediating effects. The above results suggest that by promoting the participation of residents in social organisations and increasing their philanthropic values, residents and their families are motivated to participate in donations and that increasing the level of participation in social organisations can to some extent promote an increase in philanthropic values, thus achieving the objective of promoting donation behaviour by increasing residents’ philanthropic values. On the basis of this findings, the following recommendations are made: firstly, social workers can organise activities of personal interest, recreation and leisure, sports, etc.,and guide and encourage citizens to actively participate in such social organisations, which can to some extent foster a spirit of volunteering and charitable awareness among citizens.Secondly,to promote the participation of families as a single economic unit in donations,to change the way charity is mobilised,to maximise the mobilisation of the family’s potential charitable resources and to promote the development of charity;thirdly,to implant the professional advantages and working methods of social work in charity and to promote the integration and development of social work and charity.Fourthly,to promote a modern culture of charity, with the family at its heart, and to realise the transmission and dissemination of charitable values.Encourage young people in the family to help their parents to understand social issues and philanthropy,to strengthen the embracing of philanthropic culture and concepts and to transmit good philanthropic values. |
