| Long-range objectives through year 2035 put forward by the fifth plenary session of the 19 th CPC Central Committee emphasized the importance of income to people’s livelihood, and wage is an important cornerstone of residents’ income. Therefore,it is imperative to research the factors that affecting wage in combination with the current domestic development situation.Since the reform and opening policy,China’s economy has developed rapidly, residents can get more nutrition.Dietary intaking of more refined foods which are rich in fats and sugars and prolonged sedentary hours during work and leisure, which lead obesity and overweight rates among Chinese residents have grown significantly in recent years.Obesity can increase the probability of various cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and endanger people’s health.Obesity will also increase the financial expenditure of social medical care in our country, which is not benefit to the accumulation of national wealth.Besides, studies based on Western data suggested that obesity has negative impact on employment and wage. With respect of these facts, obesity has become a factor that cannot be ignored in China’s labor market.Currently, there are limited number of papers using Chinese data to study the impact of obesity on the labor market, and the research of this topic needs to be further improved. Therefore,it has practical significance to study the impact of body weight on wages in China.CFPS2018 was used in the empirical part, which based on literature review and relative theories. The empirical part contains baseline regression, robustness check, mechanism analysis, and heterogeneity analysis. In order to deal with the endogeneity problem and research the casual relationship between obesity and wage, two stage least square model was employed in this thesis.PSM,changing the dependent variable and using another year data are used in the robustness check, which proved that the results are reliable. The mechanism part based on literature and theories to test the existence of health and authentic channels.Based on the empirical results, the findings are as follows:(1)Obesity has a general negative impact on wages in China;(2)BMI has an inverted U-shaped relationship with the logarithm of individual’ wages;(3)Women,urban residents, young groups and white collars are more negatively affected by obesity on wages. These conclusions are also consistent with those obtained in related literature. At the same time, this thesis also has some new findings:(1)Obesity can affect wages through the channels of health and aesthetic preferences,(2)People with high educational backgrounds and no administrative positions are more negatively affected by obesity on wages.Based on these results, this thesis put forward the policy suggestions from these three aspects: advocating a healthy lifestyle, improving the medical insurance system and promoting employment fairness. |
