Lying is a common social behavior of preschool children.It can not only be regarded as the adaptive behavior of early children,but also reflect the current psychological development level and internal needs of children.In the field of preschool education,except in cases where the children’s language skills are underdeveloped or where the children have difficulty distinguishing between reality and imagination,when lying is intentionally overused by children,it should attract the attention of preschool educators.In terms of children’s lying behavior education,there are many interventional empirical studies,such as model demonstration,persuasion education and situational factor discussion,but how to educate lying behavior scientifically and effectively in practice often troubles preschool educators.As a popular reading material for children,picture books can be used as an educational medium to promote children’s social development.However,there is a lack of empirical research on the causal relationship between picture books reading and children’s lying behavior in China.At the same time,character roles and anthropomorphic animal roles are common roles in children’s picture books.In particular,anthropomorphic animal roles are deeply loved by children and parents for their vivid and interesting image characteristics.But a study suggests that anthropomorphic animal roles may not have the intended impact.It is urgent to explore the actual effects of these two kinds of picture book roles on children’s lying behavior.This study adopts a three-factor between-group experimental design of 2(picture book theme: honesty theme,non-honest theme)×2(picture book role: character role,anthropomorphic animal role)×2(age: 5-year-old group,6-year-old group).Among them,the independent variables of the stimulus characteristics are picture book theme and picture book role,the independent variable of the subject characteristics is age,and the dependent variable is children’s lying behavior(using the "Resist Temptation Paradigm" guess the toy by listening to the voice,the score range is 0-1 points).This study focuses on the influence of picture book theme,picture book role and other factors on children’s lying behavior,in order to provide empirical evidence for preschool educators to adopt appropriate and effective education media to reduce children’s lying behavior in practice.In September 2022,this study invited 60 preschool education professionals to participate in the evaluation of picture book materials.After reading the contents of the picture books,all the participants should immediately fill in the Honesty Evaluation Scale of the Picture Book,and score the honesty of the picture books one by one.Finally,5picture books such as Where Did Football Go,The Unbreakable Vase,The Short-eared Rabbit,I’m An Honest Girl and Sorry,I Was Wrong were selected as the honest theme picture book group materials,and 5 picture books such as Originally I Am Very Happy,Originally I Am Very Strong,Originally I Am Very Optimistic,Originally I Am Very Confident and Originally I Can Help People were selected as the non-honest theme picture book group materials.Since October 2022,the researchers used the teacher nomination method to select 160 children from a kindergarten in Suzhou,Jiangsu Province,and 20 children from each group were randomly assigned to 8 experimental treatment groups.All the participants conducted picture book reading activities for 5weeks according to their group conditions.The activities were held twice a week for about10 minutes each time.A reading comprehension test was carried out immediately after each activity.Before and after the 5-week intervention period,in order to examine the influence of picture book reading on children’s lying behavior,the pre-test level and posttest level of children’s lying behavior were measured by the "Resist Temptation Paradigm".Chi-square test and binary logistic regression analysis were used for the experimental data,focusing on the main effects and interactions of picture book theme,picture book role and age on children’s lying behavior.The research results show that:(1)there is no significant gender or age difference in the lying behavior of children aged 5-6;(2)continuous reading honest theme picture books significantly reduced lying behavior of children aged 5-6;(3)under the condition of reading honest theme picture books,there was a significant difference in the lying behavior of children after reading character role picture books and anthropomorphic animal role picture books.Specifically,under the condition of reading honest theme picture books,the children in the character role group lied significantly less than those in the anthropomorphic animal role group;(4)reading honest theme picture books with anthropomorphic animal role had a significant age difference in reducing lying behavior among 5-year-old to 6-year-old.Specifically,after reading honest theme picture books with anthropomorphic animal role,children in the 6-year-old group lied significantly less than those in the 5-year-old group.Based on the research results and discussion,this study puts forward the following suggestions for the practice of children’s lying behavior education and children’s picture book reading guidance: First,educators can take reading honesty theme picture books as an effective way to reduce children’s lying behavior.For example,grasp the development characteristics of children’s lying and treat children’s lying behavior correctly;review the educational value of picture books,and use honest theme picture books scientifically;play the educational function of theme picture books,enrich and develop related picture book themes.Secondly,educators can choose appropriate picture book roles according to the cognitive characteristics of children of different ages.For example,give full play to the effective role model of picture books with character role in children’s personality education;attention should be paid to enhancing the authenticity of content and roles in the development of children’s picture books at the young age;make up the differences between character role and anthropomorphic animal role by means of educational support.Finally,educators should pay attention to other key factors affecting the effect of picture book reading education.For example,focus on exploring the other features of picture books and guide children to read independently;accumulate and integrate early reading experience and improve children’s reading comprehension ability.
