With the proposal of the community with a shared future for mankind,the connections between countries are getting closer.China is deeply integrated into the world in the expansion of opening up,especially in the field of education,China has become the main force of exchange and cooperation in international education.Education for international understanding helps students learn about international culture and listen to international voices through curriculum objectives and implementation pathways.Big idea is emphasized in The General High School Geography Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition Revised 2020),which aims to promote the subject core competencies with the structured curriculum content.Therefore,it is particularly important to build a teaching model in high school geography under the guidance of big idea.To analyze the characteristics of education for international understanding,a teaching model of education for international understanding in high school geography based on big idea was constructed and applied in this paper,which was based on Constructivist Learning theory,Gestalt theory and Deep Learning theory.In addition,the literature research,text analysis method,case study method and educational experiment method were also used in this paper.First,the knowledge system of education for international understanding in high school geography was constructed.By analyzing the content of education for international understanding defined by UNESCO,core competencies and Chinese scholars,the themes of education for international understanding were identified.According to the "top-down" approach of big idea,the content of education for international understanding was reconstructed based on the high school geography curriculum standards and textbooks.It was organized three small ideas and six elements,the three small ideas included understanding between people,understanding between people and nature,and understanding between people and society,the six elements included population,resource,environment,politic,economy,which provided a realistic basis for the construction of the teaching model.Second,a teaching model of education for international understanding based on big idea was constructed.The teaching concept of "Cultivating global awareness with the contextuality of big idea,improving international perspective with the integration of big idea,and promoting sustainable development with the comprehensiveness of big idea" was determined.Additionally,there were four categories of teaching objectives and four teaching procedures,and the details of teaching procedures were as follows: determining unit themes and objectives,reconstructing the knowledge framework based on big idea,creating unit tasks and activities,and designing multiple assessments.Finally,in order to verify the application and effective of teaching model,the "international cooperation" was chosen as a case study and the teaching process and evaluation form were designed in this paper.Furthermore,available results suggested that the performance of experimental class was better than the control class in the high school geography classroom in terms of students’ participation,classroom atmosphere and follow-up feedback.Overall,the experimental results provided the evidence that the teaching model could effectively cultivate international understanding literacy of high school students,which indicated that the teaching model of education for international understanding based on big idea was feasible and could provide reference for geography teaching in high school.
