| The ability to perform mathematical operations is one of the skills necessary for students’ long-term development and lifelong learning. In the mathematics curriculum, arithmetic is integral to the learning of algebra, geometry, statistics, probability and integrated practice. At the same time, the development of mathematical operations skills contributes to the development of students’ other mathematical literacies,problem-solving skills, reasoning skills and logical thinking skills.Based on this, the research questions in this article are: What is the current status of junior secondary students’ level of mathematical arithmetic skills? What are the factors that affect junior secondary students’ mathematical arithmetic skills? What are the strategies for developing the mathematical arithmetic skills of junior secondary school students? In the course of the study, this study mainly takes 349 junior high school students in a middle school in Wuwei City as the research object, including 112 students in grade7,117 students in grade 8 and 120 students in grade 9.The interviewees are three mathematics teachers in the school. This research mainly uses the literature data method, questionnaire survey method, test method, interview method and other research methods.Referring to the four manifestations of mathematical operation proposed by Professor Dong Linwei and Professor Yu Ping, this study divides mathematical operation ability into four structural dimensions : understanding operation objects, mastering operation rules, exploring operation ideas and designing operation programs.According to Professor Lin Chongde ’s mathematical operation ability level division theory and combined with SOLO understanding level classification theory, the mathematical operation ability is divided into four levels : level zero, level one, level two and level three.Analysis of the test paper data reveals that the current levels of mathematical arithmetic ability of junior secondary students are as follows:(1)The majority of junior secondary students’ mathematical arithmetic ability levels are at Level 1 and Level 2,while only a small number of students are at Level 0 and Level 3.(2)The level of mathematical operations ability of students in Year 9 was higher than that of students in Years 7 and 8.The performance of junior secondary students in mathematical operations did not follow a normal distribution.(3)There is no significant gender difference in the level of mathematical operations ability of junior secondary students.(4)There were no significant differences in the dimensions of mathematical arithmetic ability among junior secondary school students. The research study found that the factors affecting junior secondary students’ ability to perform mathematical operations were:(1)Subjective factors include students’ mathematical cognitive structure, their interest in learning mathematics, their mathematical arithmetic habits, their mastery of the basics of mathematical arithmetic, and their quality of will.(2)Objective factors include the teaching environment, teacher factors and family factors.Based on the above analysis of the current situation and the influencing factors, this study proposes strategies for developing junior secondary students’ mathematical arithmetic skills:(1)constructing a good mathematical cognitive structure;(2)consolidating basic knowledge and clarifying arithmetic reasoning;(3)attaching importance to the cultivation of students’ arithmetic habits;(4)stimulating students’ interest in arithmetic;(5)strengthening the cultivation of mathematical arithmetic thinking;(6)correcting students’ arithmetic attitudes;(7)attaching importance to algorithm Diversify and choose reasonable algorithms. |
