Integer arithmetic is the starting point of students’ learning from“number” to “formula”,the sublimation of rational number arithmetic, and the foundation of students’ further learning of fractions and functions.Based on a large amount of literature, this paper investigates the current situation of students’ integer arithmetic ability in Wanzhou district based on teaching practice, and provides a comprehensive and objective understanding of the problems reflected by students’ integer arithmetic ability level. The aim is to provide useful reference for front-line teachers. In this paper, based on a large amount of literature,we used the Compulsory Education Mathematics Curriculum Standards(2022 Edition)as the basis and my teaching practice in the internship school to determine the dimensions of integer arithmetic ability test and develop an integer arithmetic ability test paper, which was used as the basis for testing students. At the same time,in order to understand the factors influencing the development of students’ integer arithmetic ability,a questionnaire was developed to collect and organize the data in a better way by means of an online survey. To further improve the perspective of the survey, teacher interviews were conducted with front-line teachers to improve the shortcomings of the study. The analysis of students’ test results and questionnaire results with the help of SPSS 26.0 and Excel revealed the following problems in the level of middle school students’ integer arithmetic skills.(1)junior high school students’ overall integer arithmetic ability level is moderately low,and most students have better mastery at Level 1 and Level 2;(2)junior high school students’ integer arithmetic ability level is seriously polarized;(3)junior high school students in the middle level of integer arithmetic ability level account for a small proportion;(4)students are less capable of choosing reasonable methods to simplify operations;(5)junior high school students are less capable of handling symbols in integer operations;(6)junior high school students’ integer operation ability level is affected by multiple factors.According to the analysis of results of student questionnaires and teacher interviews, the factors that affect junior high school students’ ability in integer arithmetic mainly include internal factors: students’ own learning interests and habits, and mathematical thinking ability;external factors: electronic products and teachers. Finally, according to the research findings, the author proposed the corresponding strategies of problem solving from the perspective of students’ problems,in which the corresponding cultivation strategies to improve students’ integer arithmetic ability level are mainly proposed from both students’ own and the external environment.
