With the transformation and upgrading of society, the family structure and family functions in China have changed, with more and more grandparents taking up part or all of the responsibility of educating and raising their grandchildren. In intergenerational parenting families, however, children may create certain misconceptions and deviant behaviours due to the absence of paternal parents and the lack of educational ability of grandparents, which seriously affect their physical and mental development. This study used observation, interviews and questionnaires to investigate the deviant behaviours of children in intergenerational families in Nanjing’s Y community, and analysed the deviant behaviours of children in intergenerational families from three perspectives: outward behavioural deviance, inward behavioural deviance and learning adaptation. The analysis was based on three perspectives: children’s irrational cognition, inadequate family functioning and discrimination in peer interaction. The group work method was then used to explore the cognitive-behavioural theory and family systems theory to improve the behavioural problems of children in intergenerational families. In the first stage of the group, parallel groups were established to help children understand themselves and enhance their self-confidence,and to introduce behavioural therapy techniques to help children develop a sense of rules and learn good behaviour;meanwhile,in the parents’ group, games, educational learning and scenario imitation were used to help grandparents revise their educational concepts, correct their parenting patterns, learn parenting skills and improve their positive parenting skills. At the end of the group, both grandparents and grandchildren were guided to participate in group activities to improve their relationship and mutual intimacy through cooperation and interaction, creating a good family system environment for the children to correct their problematic behaviour. The results of the evaluation showed that the group activities were effective. However, behavioural change in children is a long-term process,so more care needs to be given to children in intergenerational parenting families so that they are supported by all systems, including school, community and society,to promote their healthy development.
