With the rapid change of science and technology and the fast development of global economy, more compound talents capable of strong practical application ability are desired.ESP(English for Special Purposes)is being paid growing attention due to its practical service for various professions. The main task of secondary vocational schools is to foster applicable talents with professional skills.Secondary vocational education is careeroriented.ESP teaching aims to strengthen students’ language communication and application ability concerning their future jobs. And this target coincides with the requirements of English teaching reform in secondary vocational schools. However, due to various factors, many secondary vocational schools have not yet constructed a very mature and effective ESP teaching mode. This thesis adopts various methods, including literature research, questionnaire survey, interview and experimental analysis.By studying and researching advanced teaching theories, analyzing and summarizing the relevant teaching researches at home and abroad, the author analyses the current situation and existing problems in secondary schools as well as puts forward a career-oriented ESP teaching mode which integrates “student-centered"teaching methods with the evaluation system combining formative evaluation and summative evaluation, enterprise evaluation and school learning. The purpose of this study is to explore the feasibility of this teaching mode in English classes of secondary vocational schools,so that we can promote the further development of secondary vocational education and the cultivation of applicable talents. The author intends to investigate the following three questions:(1)Are student-centered teaching methods accepted by students? How is the effect?(2)Is the evaluation system combining formative evaluation and summative evaluation, enterprise evaluation and school learning accepted by students? How is the effect?(3)Can this teaching mode improve the English performance of secondary vocational students? How do students react? This thesis follows four principles to construct the teaching practice: the combination of teaching content and professional demands, the combination of context creation, taskdriven approach and group cooperation, the combination of formative evaluation and summative evaluation, and the combination of enterprise evaluation and school learning. The author selected two classes of Hotel Management in Grade Two to conduct an 18-week comparative study. The experimental class adopts the new ESP teaching mode while the control class sticks to the old one. Before and after the experiment,a questionnaire was conducted in the experimental class to reflect the changes in the students’ English learning ability and learning attitude. The result shows that after the experiment, the students’ selfefficacy and attitude towards English learning were enhanced. When interviewed by the author, most students also expressed their affirmation and love for the new teaching mode.Furthermore,a systematic analysis was conducted according to the results of the two classes’ pre-test and post-test scores in both written test and oral test by using the statistical analysis software SPSS.25.The result of the experiment shows that the experimental class has a more obvious improvement than the control class, especially in the oral test. The above results strongly prove the effectiveness and practicality of the career-oriented ESP teaching mode in secondary vocational schools. In view of the limitations of this study, the author expects to explore and improve this mode in more teaching practices in the future.
