International Students’ Chinese Petro-culture Identification In Petroleum Universities In China

The number of international students coming to China is increasing year by year.After coming to China,international students will come into contact with Chinese culture.Their attitudes towards Chinese culture and whether they are identified with Chinese culture or not have a great impact on their study and life in China,on the effectiveness of Chinese education,and on cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.At present,most domestic studies on the cultural identification of international students in China focus on international students from specific countries or studying in a certain region in China,but less on those in certain such industry as petroleum-specified universities,and few is concerned with a specific industrial culture.This study integrates questionnaire and interview to investigate the identification of 102 international students studying at China University of Petroleum with Chinese petroleum culture.The data from the questionnaire are analyzed by SPSS25.0 to investigate the current situation of Chinese petroleum cultural identity and the affecting factors,and to provide feasible suggestions for improving the Chinese petroleum cultural identity of international students from petroleum universities based on the results of semi-structured interviews.The main findings are as follows: First,in general,international students’ identification with Chinese petroleum culture is moderately high.In terms of specific dimensions,international students in China have the highest identification with the behavioral dimension,the second highest with the emotional dimension,and the lowest with the cognitive dimension.Secondly,gender,major,length of time in China,whether there are oil cooperation projects between the host country and China,and whether they know the history of China’s oil industry development before coming to China are the factors that affect the Chinese oil culture identity of international students.Finally,based on the results of the semi-structured interviews,The main proposals put forward in this study include:strengthening energy cooperation with countries along ‘the Belt and Road’at the national level,providing training and education for international students before they come to China,increasing the dissemination of Chinese oil culture at the enterprise level,providing internship and work opportunities for international students in Chinese oil companies,strengthening cooperation between schools and enterprises,offering oil culture courses in schools,enriching the ways for international students to learn about Chinese oil culture,and strengthening Chinese language teaching for international students.This study analyzes the current situation of Chinese petroleum culture identity and related influencing factors among international students coming to China from petroleum universities,aiming to promote the industrialization of cultural identity research and provide some references and suggestions to promote the development of international student education in petroleum universities and the dissemination of Chinese petroleum culture in overseas.
