After the new curriculum reform,the history and culture of mathematics have been included in the Mathematics Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022edition),in which basic guidelines for teaching and education have been formulated.However,in the current secondary education,mathematics teachers do not apply the history of mathematics in the classroom to an adequate extent.This leads to the phenomenon of "high evaluation and low application" in the history of mathematics.In this context,it is very meaningful to explore the integration of the history of mathematics into the current middle school mathematics education.The purpose of this paper is to study the application of the history of mathematics in the middle school mathematics teaching.Therefore,we conducted a questionnaire survey on the history of mathematics in the middle school mathematics education.Then,we interview individual teachers to understand the current state of integrating the history of mathematics into secondary mathematics education.Finally,we draw conclusions and recommendations based on our findings.According to the research results,(1)middle school mathematics teachers hold a positive attitude towards the educational role of mathematics history.However,most middle school math teachers rarely use their knowledge of the history of math in the classroom.(2)One of the main ways to introduce the history of mathematics into the mathematics curriculum is to explain short stories about mathematicians to increase students’ interest in learning.(3)The main way for middle school mathematics teachers to know the history of mathematics is through textbooks and study guides.Most students learn about the history of mathematics from textbooks or teachers’ lectures.(4)There are many factors affecting the integration of mathematics history into mathematics education.It includes the degree of teachers mastering the history of mathematics,the degree of teachers understanding the educational value of the history of mathematics,the degree of abundant resources of the history of mathematics,and the degree of students’ fondness for the history of mathematics.(5)Most students believe that the main purpose of learning mathematics is to get good grades.Most students do not think that the history of mathematics is useful for learning mathematics.One of their favorite ways to bring the history of math into the classroom is to watch mini videos before class.The author puts forward some research suggestions,hoping to integrate the history of mathematics into mathematics classroom more effectively.
