| From the film era to the digital era, changes in film technology have led to innovations in film production and projection.Since 2016,Ang Lee’s exploration of cinema using high frame rate technology has not only revolutionised the use of film technology, but has also made high frame rate films the focus of much controversy at the moment.Using Ang Lee’s high frame rate films as an object of investigation, this paper explores the media experience of high frame rate films, using Don Ihde’s theory on the relationship between human and technological mediation to reveal that high frame rate technology mediates the production and projection of films and shapes the visual perception of film viewers. The paper is divided into five chapters. In the introductory part, the paper defines the relevant concepts and theories, and clarifies the purpose, methodology and ideas of the study;in the first chapter, the paper analyses the development of film frame rate and the establishment of high frame rate technology standards in a media archaeological way,and examines the relationship between high frame rate technology, high frame rate films and high frame rate film viewers from the perspective of media materiality;in the second chapter, the paper analyses the relationship between high frame rate technology, high frame rate films and high frame rate film viewers from the perspective of technology availability. In the second chapter, the paper analyses how high frame rate technology,as a medium, mediates the production of digital cinema, explaining how high frame rate technology and film narrative are coterminous, and providing a visual framework for the viewer to watch.By analyzing the technological mediation of the viewer’s focus, subjective perspective and embodied presence, the third chapter reveals that high frame rate technology shapes the viewer’s mediated experience, allowing for a clear, fluid and hyper-real visual perception. Finally,it is argued that,in the context of the human-technology relationship, mediated digital technology expands the production and projection of cinema and the human media experience, while at the same time confining the human to a specific technological framework, and that cinema may be dissolved by its own clarity, fluidity and hyper-reality under the ’seat frame’ of technology. |
