| Many scholars have done a lot of research on the inequality of social strata at the admission and graduation stages of college students, and believe that the reasons for the inequality mainly focus on the differences in family background, process learning performance and school support.Compared with basic education, the academic community used to think that parents’engagement in college students’studies was very low,so the impact on the continuation of social inequality almost disappeared. As higher education enters the popularization stage, university administrators find that more and more parents are involved in university and university affairs, especially wealthy families, and seem to extend the hypothesis of"effectively maintaining inequality"beyond K-12 education. This study first explored the connotation and structure of college students’parental engagement through the method of literature analysis, and then conducted a questionnaire survey on 684 college students in East China using the self-compiled parental engagement scale and academic achievement scale, and made statistical analysis of the data. The findings of this study are as follows:(1)Parental engagement of college students refers to the external behavior and internal emotion of parents participating in their children’s college study and life, which aims to support their children’s development.Parents’engagement mainly includes providing material support, relationship network, emotional support and information advice for college students. The scale of parental engagement for college students based on four dimensions has good reliability and validity.(2)The average score of material support in parents’engagement of college students is the highest, and the relationship network is the lowest;Female students scored significantly higher than male students, humanities and social sciences students scored significantly higher than science and engineering students, local undergraduate students scored significantly higher than 985 and 211 engineering college students, only child students scored significantly higher than non only child students, students with higher family income were significantly higher than students with lower family income, non first generation college students were significantly higher than first generation college students,non-agricultural registered residence students were significantly higher than rural registered residence students.(3)Through regression analysis,it is found that parental engagement can directly predict college students’academic achievements.Furthermore, the method of introducing interaction items in the regression equation found that parental engagement has a greater impact on college students with low family socio-economic status. Therefore, parental engagement can reduce the difference in development level of students due to different family socio-economic status, and alleviate the current situation of unbalanced development of college students.Through regression analysis, after controlling for relevant variables that affect academic achievement,it was found that parental engagement can still directly predict college students’academic achievement.Furthermore, the way of introducing the interaction term into the regression equation finds that the interaction term coefficient of parental engagement and family socioeconomic statusβ3<0,indicating that parental engagement has a greater impact on college students with low family socioeconomic status. Therefore, parental engagement can reduce the development level difference of students due to different socioeconomic status of families, and alleviate the unbalanced development of college students.Based on the above findings, this paper puts forward the following suggestions:First of all,in order to better bridge the gap between high school exam-oriented education and university quality education, alleviate the structural effect brought by family inequality, and enable students to play a rational learning freedom, parents’engagement is necessary and reasonable.Secondly,we should clarify the concept, connotation, dimensions and limits of parental engagement, and clarify the responsibilities of all parties. Finally, parents should improve their awareness and initiative to help their children adapt to college study and life at the"early adulthood"stage, and promote their better growth;Colleges and universities should reshape the management philosophy, provide corresponding guidance and support to parents, including issuing parents’manuals, launching parents’classes and other activities, and implement all-round education. |
