| Ernest Hemingway is a literary giant of the world in the 20 th century.He has a legendary life multiple social roles,such as writer,journalist,soldier,hunter,fishing expert,and so on.Among them,the most accomplished and influential social roles are writer and journalist.In the field of literary criticism,the study of Hemingway has formed a magnificent academic industry,while the study of Hemingway,a journalist,has not attracted the attention of scholars in the field of journalism and communication.In fact,Hemingway’s first job was as journalist.He witnessed and participated in a series of major historical events all around the world during his lifetime by participatory reporting.Hemingway’s journalistic practice,especially the depth and influence of his participatory reporting,provides us with a new research approach to a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of this literary giant’s other side which was journalist Hemingway.In general,Hemingway’s journalistic activities are not limited to his ordinary journalistic identity,especially after becoming a famous writer,he participated deeply in the reported events more than before,and practiced the humanitarian concepts of fairness and justice he pursued to the maximum extent.Therefore,the main issues discussed in this paper are whether Hemingway,as a famous writer and journalist,crossed the boundaries of his journalistic activities when intervening in major historical events,whether the position of opinion leaders when speaking out in the media was objective,realistic,and fair,and whether the scale of his participatory reporting was reasonable.The paper consists of four parts,corresponding to four chapters.The first part mainly discusses the background of Hemingway’s journalistic career and the formation of his beliefs in profession.The multiple factors such as family background,era environment,and professional identity have created Hemingway’s vision of becoming a journalist,tempered his basic qualities for survival and interviewing in difficult environments,and created opportunities for him to step into the press;The second part mainly combs Hemingway’s journalistic practice,observing the changes in his participation in reporting events from a journalist to a writer journalist,and discussing the characteristics of his reporting in different periods,such as freelance writer,magazine columnist,and war correspondent.This is reflected in the decrease in restrictions on news writing,and the year-on-year increase in his participation and concern in historical events;The third part mainly discusses the characteristics’ similarities and differences of Hemingway’s general reporting and participatory reporting works during the process of identity transformation between reporter and writer,such as a more distinctive literary writing strategy of reporting and a deeper degree of participation in events.At the same time,in the process of intervening in major events and pursuing social benefits as a journalist,his reports suffered from the drawbacks of insufficient objectivity;The fourth part mainly analyzes the impact of Hemingway’s participatory reporting practice on the international community and later the press,based on the research and elaboration in the previous three chapters.For example,it accumulated practical experience for the development of new journalistic theory and the growth of journalist writers’ group,while creating social benefits,whicih also exceeded the boundaries of journalists due to excessive intervention,affecting the implementation of news reporting tasks within its responsibilities,and then form a holistic understanding and evaluation of journalist Hemingway. |
