Study On Food Security In Indonesia

Food security is the major concern of the people’s livelihood of a country.It bears on the country’s long-term peace and stability and is also the material basis and prerequisite guarantee for the country’s economic development.Indonesia used to be one of the world’s largest food importers.Different from other food-deficit countries with the barren land and harsh natural conditions,the nature condition of Indonesia is very suitable for food crops growing.Indonesia has fertile soil and suitable climate,and the food crops in Indonesia can ripe twice or three times a year.Besides,Indonesia has abundant fishery resources and forestry resources.It seems that Indonesia can’t be a food-deficit country.However,the food security problem in Indonesia is extremely serious.Indonesia has kept importing rice in most of the year since its independence in 1945,except for the decade of 1984～1993.In 2019,there are 17 Indonesian provinces out of 34,including 88 cities,facing food lack,indicating that the food security problem in Indonesia is extremely serious.Started with the current situation of food security in Indonesia,the paper tried to give an objective description of Indonesian food security situation using the data published by the World Bank,FAO,and the Indonesian media.The description was developed from four aspects,that are grain production capacity,regional distribution of grain,national purchasing power and national nutrition level.The paper analyzed the causes of the food security problems in Indonesia,and sorted out the policy measures taken by four long-serving presidents to solve the food security problems.This paper argued that the impact of land policy,backward agricultural production technology,inadequate rural infrastructure,population problem and poverty problem are the key problems that hinder Indonesia to achieve food security.This paper held that increasing government spending,maintaining the area of agricultural land,improving rural infrastructure,promoting the transition from traditional agriculture to modernization,increasing grain productivity and reducing poverty are effective ways to solve the problem of food security in Indonesia,besides,strengthening the cooperation with China is also essential.The Cooperation with China can make use of China’s capital,technology and experience to accelerate the construction of Indonesia’s modern agriculture.In the future,the two countries can carry out more cooperation in the field of food security.
