China is currently facing a complex economic situation, with a complex and changing international environment and a decline in domestic economic growth.Although the development of traditional industries contributes greatly to economic growth, they have negative impacts such as high energy consumption, high pollution and low output, which have seriously hindered the upgrading of the industrial structure of traditional industries and are now in urgent need of getting out of this predicament.Transforming the mode of economic development and enhancing production efficiency to achieve scientific and technological innovation is a matter of urgency, and innovation is becoming increasingly important in this process.Throughout the development of the industry, manufacturing agglomeration has played a very important role in the development process of the industry, and also as a driving force to promote the upgrading of the industrial structure. Therefore,in this thesis, when examining the relationship between manufacturing agglomeration and industrial structure upgrading, after determining that manufacturing agglomeration affects industrial structure upgrading,we further investigate whether there is a mediating effect of technological innovation in its influence path and the proportion of the mediating effect. In this way,we determine whether the traditional production model can be transformed into an innovation-driven development model, and on this basis,we put forward reasonable suggestions for the development of China’s industrial structure, which is not only of good theoretical and practical significance, but also of good policy value. There is a wealth of relevant research on the theoretical links between industrial agglomeration and industrial structure upgrading, but relatively few studies have incorporated technological innovation, industrial agglomeration and industrial structure optimisation into a unified research framework. In this thesis, theoretical research and empirical analysis are conducted on the three by incorporating manufacturing agglomeration, technological innovation and industrial structure upgrading into a unified research framework.Based on the panel data of 30 provincial administrative units in China from 2009 to 2020,the corresponding measures are used to measure the indicators of manufacturing agglomeration, technological innovation, industrial structure upgrading, human capital, economic development level, degree of government intervention and foreign direct investment, and to construct fixed and mediating effect models to investigate the three factors of manufacturing agglomeration, technological innovation and industrial structure upgrading. The empirical study on the influence mechanism between manufacturing agglomeration, technological innovation and industrial structure upgrading is carried out in three regions: East,Central and West. The results of the study show that manufacturing agglomeration has a significant role in promoting industrial structure upgrading in the overall, eastern, central and western regions of the country. This thesis further proves that: technological innovation plays a significant partial mediating effect in the relationship between manufacturing agglomeration and industrial structure upgrading, with the mediating effect accounting for 30.66%;the mediating effect accounts for 31.98%,26.98% and 48.11% in the eastern, central and western regions respectively, with the largest mediating effect in the western region, which indicates that the production mode can be transformed into an innovation-driven mode.Combined with the above findings, countermeasures are proposed in order to target the promotion of industrial structure upgrading: technological innovation should be appropriately encouraged to promote industrial structure upgrading;the level of manufacturing agglomeration should be promoted through multiple channels in order to achieve the dual objectives of enhancing the level of technological innovation and promoting industrial structure upgrading. In order to address the problem of uneven regional development,a differentiated regional industrial policy should be implemented, and a mechanism for coordinated regional economic development should be established,so that the economies of each region can develop in a sustainable and coordinated manner.
