| China is at an essential stage of high-quality development. In the context of innovationdriven development, technology has accelerated its iterations, and enterprises occupy the primary position in innovation and are the "leaders" of China’s scientific and technological innovation.Innovation activities are dualistic and can be divided explicitly into exploratory innovation, which explores new technologies and knowledge to build core competencies for the company for future development, and exploitative innovation, which is based on the extension of existing technologies and knowledge to consolidate existing customers and markets for the company and pursue short-term benefits.A successful company should have the ability to grasp the present and adapt to future change, focusing on the present to avoid obsolescence while looking to the future to ensure long-term growth.Falling short of performance expectations is a real problem that companies often face.In recent years, the downward pressure on the economy has increased due to the more complex and severe international environment and the overwhelming impact of the new crown pneumonia epidemic at home. The uncertainty of business operations has increased significantly in the face of the complex market environment.Whether enterprises can respond to the demands of the times and actively play a significant role in science and technology innovation, exploring and exploiting innovation when faced with performance-aspiration gap,is a real issue worthy of further discussion. After reviewing and summarizing relevant research literature at home and abroad, this paper proposes the research hypothesis of this paper based on Threat Rigidity Theory,Stakeholder Theory,Upper Echelons Theory, and Resource-based Theory. This paper provides an insight into the impact of differences in performance expectations at the business level on exploratory and exploitative innovations that differ in terms of the extent and purpose of innovation. It also extends the contextual study of ambidexterity innovation to the level of managerial traits and resource capabilities within the firm, and explores the moderating role played by CEO openness and slack resources in the process of performance-aspiration gap affecting firms’ ambidexterity innovation decisions, completing the related area of research with innovation.Meanwhile, this paper takes GEM-listed companies as the research object, uses their patent application data, demographic characteristics data, and financial data during 2012-2021 to construct balanced panel data, and uses the data analysis software Stata 15 to conduct descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis on the research data, and finally draws the following conclusions:(a)Performance-aspiration gap significantly inhibit firms’ exploratory and exploitative innovation decisions;(b)CEO openness is effective in mitigating the inhibiting effect of the performance expectation gap on firms’ exploratory innovation, while it does not play a significant moderating role in the process of performance-aspiration gap affecting exploitative innovation;(c)Slack resources can effectively mitigate the inhibiting effect of performanceaspiration gap on exploratory and exploitative innovation in firms.Based on the findings and conclusions of the study, this paper draws the following indicative recommendations: First, enterprises should pay attention to the training and selection of managers and give full play to their character strengths in the governance process in order to promote the enterprise to enhance exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation input;Second, enterprises should pay attention to the scientific allocation of slack resources to make the best use of them while avoiding falling into the resource trap;Thirdly, the government should focus on support and supervision. As the main body of innovation activities, enterprises have an essential influence on high-quality economic development. When innovation activities are limited, the government should play a supportive role and do an excellent job of supervision to enhance the innovative vitality of enterprises effectively. |
