| Promoting common prosperity along with high-quality development is an important strategic task facing our economy as it enters the new stage of development.Since then, under the leadership of the Party Central Committee,China has achieved remarkable economic growth and continuous improvement of living standards. However, despite the rapid economic and social development,China still has problems such as urban-rural dual structure, the distribution of public resources is obvious skewed, and urban and rural income is unbalanced. In view of this, this paper will analyze from the perspective of government educational expenditure to explore the relationship between government educational expenditure and urban-rural income gap from three aspects: theory, reality and empirical evidence, hoping to make a modest contribution to coordinating urban-rural relations and constructing a harmonious society in a certain sense.Firstly,at the level of theoretical analysis, this paper composes and summarizes the previous related literature, and sorts out the measurement of urban-rural income gap,the influencing factors and the mechanism of the role of government educational expenditure in influencing urban-rural income gap,so as to have a preliminary understanding of the relationship between the two.Secondly,at the level of present situation analysis, this paper finds that China’s government educational expenditure increases year by year, but there are still problems such as insufficient scale and unreasonable distribution;the urban-rural income gap is obvious, and there is serious imbalance between regions.Again,in terms of empirical research, this paper conducted an empirical analysis to verify the impact of government educational expenditure on the urban-rural income gap, based on the provincial panel data of China from 2007-2019.It is found that(1)a fixed-effects model is used to test that government educational expenditure has a negative impact on the urban-rural income gap, that is,an increase in government educational expenditure leads to a reduction in the urban-rural income gap.(2)The effect of government educational expenditure on the urban-rural income gap varies by stage, where an increase in the share of expenditure on secondary and higher education reduces the income gap, while an increase on primary education widens the gap.(3)Robustness tests also significantly support the above findings, and this effect can be heterogeneous depending on regions. Finally,in terms of policy recommendations, the paper puts forward policy recommendations based on the findings of the study, such as continuing to increase the scale of government expenditure on education, optimizing the structure of government expenditure on education, promoting the innovative development of township enterprises, deepening inclusive financial services, and increasing investment in teachers for rural areas. To solidly promote common prosperity,it is necessary to accelerate the construction of an educational power, prioritize the development of education, promote educational equity, and narrow the educational inequality between urban and rural. The analysis results of this paper can provide theoretical suggestions for formulating a reasonable government educational investment policy, which is conducive to sharing the fruits of economic development for all people. |
