Research On Relationship Between The Embedding Position In Global Value Chain And Value Capture

Although it has been disturbed by deglobalization,economic globalization is still the basic trend of world economic development.In line with this trend,it will remain an important way for enterprises to upgrade China’s manufacturing industry from the manufacturing process at the low-end of the global value chain to the higher-end design and R&D.However,under this mode of industrial upgrading,it is a troubling challenge that the value capture ability of China’s manufacturing industry may not be enough advanced to level up to a higher position of the global value chain.In this regard,this paper uses the data of the World input-output Table(WIOD)and other databases to study the relationship between the embedded location of the global value chain and the value capture from the perspective of technical complexity.The main outcomes of this work are the following:(1)with the improvement of global value chain embedding position,the industry’s value capture ability will continue to improve.Meanwhile when it reaches a certain rate,with the continuous improvement of the embedded position,the value capture ability of the industry will gradually weaken,and there reveal an inverted U-shaped relationship.(2)the value capture ability of industries with different technological complexity in the global value chain is different.For the high-tech complex industries,its position and value capture ability in the global value chain are on the low side;for the medium-tech complex industries,even if the embedded position of the global value chain is high,but the value capture ability in the global value chain is not as good as the low-tech complexity industry;for the low-tech complexity industry,its value capture ability is strong and occupies an important position in the global value chain.(3)increasing technology complexity is an effective mechanism to enhance the ability of value capture when it is embedded in the global value chain.Indeed,By increasing the complexity of technology,enterprises can improve their interdependence,has more bargaining power,and high-level value capture.Given that the analysis of GVC upgrading strategies from the perspective of value capture from a theoretical and policy perspectives are worthy of attention,this work and its highlighted results are of great theoretical and practical significance for Chinese enterprises to develop innovation-driven GVC climbing strategies.
