With the rapid development and progress of the Internet,third-party payments are born and then compete with commercial banks’ intermediary business in the payments sector.Rapid development of third party companies,it has also led to a boom in third party payment business, and its business in the payment and settlement category, bank card category and agency category overlaps with the intermediary business of traditional commercial banks, which has a certain impact on the business activities of commercial banks. The business volume of small and medium-sized commercial banks is smaller and far less than that of large state-owned commercial banks, and thus are more affected and need to more effective coping strategies. This paper adopts the literature research method and the empirical analysis method, firstly,it compares the relevant literature, then it examines the development status of the intermediary business between third-party payment and small and medium-sized commercial banks.Next,it analyses the impact relationship between third-party payments and the intermediary business of small and medium-sized commercial banks from the intermediary business of payment and settlement, bank card, agency and custodian business, and examines whether the development of third-party payment brings opportunities or challenges to the intermediary business of small and medium-sized commercial banks. Then in the empirical analysis section,we select the financial data of 16 small and medium-sized commercial banks from 2011 to 2021 to construct an empirical analysis model, and carry out an empirical analysis on the influence of the intermediary business of small and medium-sized commercial banks by third-party Internet payment and third-party mobile payment respectively, and draw the following conclusions: both third-party Internet payment and third-party mobile payment show a significant positive correlation with the intermediary business of small and medium-sized commercial banks. Finally, based on the conclusions drawn from the theoretical and empirical analyses, suggestions are made for small and medium-sized commercial banks to respond in four areas: reforming and innovating traditional businesses, vigorously developing intermediary businesses with high added value, strengthening cooperation with third-party payments, and acquiring a controlling stake in third-party payment institutions.
